AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE SYSTEM, Diagnostic DTC:P071012

DTC Code DTC Name
P071012 Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor "A" Circuit Short to Battery

DESCRIPTION

The ATF temperature sensor converts the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) temperature into a resistance value for use by the ECM.

B000N8CE07

The ECM applies a voltage to the temperature sensor through terminal THO1 of the ECM.

The sensor resistance changes with the ATF temperature. As the temperature rises, the sensor resistance decreases.

One terminal of the sensor is grounded so that the sensor resistance and voltage decrease as the temperature rises.

The ECM calculates the fluid temperature based on the voltage signal.

    DTC Detection Condition 1:

  1. 15 minutes or more have elapsed since the engine was started when the engine coolant temperature or intake air temperature was -29.375°C (-20.875°F) or less.

  2. ATF temperature sensor voltage is higher than 4.915 V.

  3. 0.5 seconds

  4. 1-trip detection logic

    DTC Detection Condition 2:

  1. 10 seconds or more have elapsed since the engine was started when the engine coolant temperature or intake air temperature was more than -29.375°C (-20.875°F).

  2. ATF temperature sensor voltage is higher than 4.915 V.

  3. 0.5 seconds

  4. 1-trip detection logic

  • Wiring harness connector

  • Open in ATF temperature sensor circuit

  • Transmission wire (ATF temperature sensor)

  • ECM

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

This DTC indicates an open in the ATF temperature sensor circuit. The ATF temperature sensor converts ATF temperature into an electrical resistance value. Based on the resistance, the ECM determines the ATF temperature, and can detect an open in the ATF temperature sensor circuit. If the resistance value of the ATF temperature sensor is more than 156 kΩ*1, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction of the ATF temperature sensor or wiring harness, illuminates the MIL and stores this DTC.

*1: -40°C (-40°F) is indicated regardless of the actual ATF temperature.

Tech Tips

The ATF temperature can be checked on the GTS display.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

Note

Perform registration and/or initialization when parts related to the automatic transaxle are replaced Click here.

Tech Tips

  • Using the GTS to read the Data List allows the values or states of switches, sensors, actuators and other items to be read without removing any parts. This non-intrusive inspection can be very useful because intermittent conditions or signals may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed. Reading the Data List information early in troubleshooting is one way to save diagnostic time.

  • After performing repair, clear the DTCs and perform the following procedure to check that DTCs are not output.

    1. Start the engine and wait for 15 minutes or more.

    2. Check for DTCs again Click here.

  1. DATA LIST

    Note

In the table below, the values listed under "Normal Condition" are reference values. Do not depend solely on these reference values when deciding whether a part is faulty or not.

    1. Warm up the engine.

    2. Turn the engine switch off.

    3. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    4. Turn the engine switch on (IG).

    5. Turn the GTS on.

    6. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Transmission / Data List.

    7. Read the Data List according to the display on the GTS.

      Min.: -40°C (-40°F)

      Max.: 150°C (302°F)

      • Approximately 80°C (176°F): After stall speed test

      • Equal to ambient temperature after cold soak

If the value is -40°C (-40°F) or 150°C (302°F), the ATF temperature sensor circuit is open or shorted.

      Tech Tips

      • If DTC P071012 is output and the GTS indicates -40°C (-40°F), the circuit is open. Measure the resistance between terminal THO1 (OIL) and body ground.

150°C (302°F) or more Short circuit
      • If a circuit related to the ATF temperature sensor becomes open, DTC P071012 is stored immediately (in 0.5 seconds). If DTC P071012 is stored, DTC P071000 cannot be detected.

It is not necessary to inspect the circuit when DTC P071000 is stored.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ATF TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUIT)

    1. Disconnect the E96 ECM connector.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
