CYLINDER BLOCK INSPECTION

PROCEDURE


  1. INSPECT CONNECTING ROD THRUST CLEARANCE


    1. Install the connecting rod cap.

      Click here

    2. A01LVM5

      Using a dial indicator, measure the thrust clearance while moving the connecting rod cap back and forth.

      Standard thrust clearance
      0.160 to 0.342 mm (0.00630 to 0.0135 in.)
      Maximum thrust clearance
      0.342 mm (0.0135 in.)

      If the thrust clearance is greater than the maximum, replace the connecting rod as necessary. If necessary, replace the crankshaft.

  2. INSPECT CONNECTING ROD OIL CLEARANCE


    1. Clean the crank pin and connecting rod bearing.

    2. Check the crank pin and connecting rod bearing for pitting and scratches.

      Lay a strip of Plastigage on the crank pin.

    4. A01M1Z8C05
      *a Front Mark

      Check that the front mark of the connecting rod cap is facing forward.

    5. Install the connecting rod cap.

      Do not turn the crankshaft.

    6. Remove the connecting rod cap.

    7. A01LYLRC12

      *b Plastigage

      Measure the Plastigage at its widest point.

      Standard oil clearance
      0.014 to 0.038 mm (0.000551 to 0.00150 in.)
      Maximum oil clearance
      0.070 mm (0.00276 in.)

      If the oil clearance is greater than the maximum, replace the connecting rod bearings. If necessary, replace the crankshaft.

      Note

      Remove the Plastigage completely after the measurement.

      Tech Tips

      If replacing a connecting rod bearing, replace it with one that has the same number as its respective connecting rod cap. Each connecting rod bearing standard thickness is indicated by a 1, 2, or 3 mark on its surface.

    8. Perform the inspection above for each cylinder.

  3. INSPECT CYLINDER BLOCK FOR WARPAGE


    1. A01M22D

      Using a straightedge and feeler gauge, check the surface which contacts the cylinder head gasket for warpage.

      Maximum warpage
      0.05 mm (0.00197 in.)

      If the warpage is greater than the maximum, replace the cylinder block sub-assembly.

  4. INSPECT CYLINDER BORE

      Using a cylinder gauge, measure the cylinder bore diameter at the positions (A) and (B) in both the thrust and axial directions.

      Standard diameter
      80.500 to 80.513 mm (3.1693 to 3.1698 in.)
      Maximum diameter
      80.633 mm (3.1745 in.)

      If the average diameter of the 4 positions is more than the maximum, replace the cylinder block sub-assembly.

  5. INSPECT PISTON


    1. A01LYP7

      Using a gasket scraper, scrape off any carbon on the piston top.

    2. A01M288

      Using a groove cleaning tool or broken piston ring, clean the piston ring grooves.

    3. A01LUUL

      Using a brush and solvent, thoroughly clean the piston.

      Note

      Do not use a wire brush.

    4. A01LWBFE02
      *1 10.3 mm

      Using a micrometer, measure the piston diameter at a position that is 10.3 mm (0.4055 in.) from the bottom of the piston (refer to the illustration).

      Standard piston diameter
      80.471 to 80.491 mm (3.16814 to 3.16893 in.)

      If the diameter is not as specified, replace the piston and piston pin.

  6. INSPECT PISTON OIL CLEARANCE


    1. Subtract the piston diameter measurement from the cylinder bore diameter measurement.

      Standard oil clearance
      0.009 to 0.042 mm (0.000354 to 0.00165 in.)
      Maximum oil clearance
      0.08 mm (0.00315 in.)

      If the piston oil clearance is more than the maximum, replace all the pistons. If necessary, replace the cylinder block sub-assembly.

  7. INSPECT RING GROOVE CLEARANCE

      Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between a new piston ring and the wall of the ring groove.

      If the groove clearance is not as specified, replace the piston and piston pin.

  8. INSPECT PISTON RING END GAP

      Using a piston, push the piston ring a little beyond the bottom of the ring travel, 50 mm (1.97 in.) from the top of the cylinder block sub-assembly.

      Using a feeler gauge, measure the end gap.

      If the end gap is more than the maximum, replace the piston ring. If the end gap is more than the maximum even with a new piston ring, replace the cylinder block sub-assembly.

  9. INSPECT PISTON PIN OIL CLEARANCE

    There is only 1 type of supply part for piston with pin sub-assembly.

      Using a caliper gauge, measure the piston pin bore diameter.

      A 20.006 to 20.009 mm (0.78764 to 0.78775 in.)

      If the diameter is not as specified, replace the piston and piston pin.

    2. A01LW5CN14

      Using a micrometer, measure the piston pin diameter.

      If the diameter is not as specified, replace the piston pin.

      If the diameter is not as specified, replace the connecting rod.

    4. Subtract the piston pin diameter measurement from the piston pin bore diameter measurement.

    5. Subtract the piston pin diameter measurement from the connecting rod small end bore diameter measurement.

      0.005 to 0.011 mm (0.000197 to 0.000433 in.)
      Maximum oil clearance
      0.014 mm (0.000551 in.)

      If the oil clearance is more than the maximum, replace the connecting rod small end bush. If necessary, replace the piston and piston pin as a set.

  10. INSPECT CONNECTING ROD BOLT

      Using a vernier caliper, measure the diameter of the connecting rod bolt in the area shown in the illustration.

      Standard diameter
      6.6 to 6.7 mm (0.2598 to 0.2638 in.)
      Minimum diameter
      6.4 mm (0.2520 in.)

      If the diameter is less than the minimum, replace the connecting rod bolt with a new one.

  11. INSPECT CONNECTING ROD SUB-ASSEMBLY


    1. A01LY2Y

      Using a connecting rod sub-assembly aligner and feeler gauge, check the connecting rod sub-assembly alignment.


      1. Check for misalignment.

        Maximum misalignment
        0.05 mm (0.00197 in.) per 100 mm (3.94 in.)

        If the misalignment is more than the maximum, replace the connecting rod sub-assembly.

      2. A01LV63

        Check for twist.

        Maximum twist
        0.15 mm (0.00591 in.) per 100 mm (3.94 in.)

        If the twist is more than the maximum, replace the connecting rod sub-assembly.

  12. INSPECT CRANKSHAFT


    1. A01LVIR

      Using a dial indicator and V-blocks, measure the runout as shown in the illustration.

      Maximum runout
      0.03 mm (0.00118 in.)

      If the runout is greater than the maximum, replace the crankshaft.

    2. A01LXSUN05

      Using a micrometer, measure the diameter of each main journal.

      Standard diameter
      47.988 to 48.000 mm (1.8893 to 1.8898 in.)

      If the diameter is not as specified, check the crankshaft oil clearance.

    3. Check each main journal for taper and out-of-round as shown in the illustration.

      Maximum taper and out-of-round
      0.004 mm (0.000157 in.)

      If the taper or out-of-round is greater than the maximum, replace the crankshaft.

    5. Inspect each crank pin for taper and out-of-round.

      Maximum taper and out-of-round
      0.004 mm (0.000157 in.)

      If the taper or out-of-round is greater than the maximum, replace the crankshaft.

  13. INSPECT CRANKSHAFT THRUST CLEARANCE


    1. Install the crankshaft bearing cap.

    2. A01LZZ4

      Using a dial indicator, measure the thrust clearance while prying the crankshaft back and forth with a screwdriver.

      Standard thrust clearance
      0.04 to 0.14 mm (0.00157 to 0.00551 in.)
      Maximum thrust clearance
      0.18 mm (0.00709 in.)

      If the thrust clearance is greater than the maximum, replace the thrust washers as a set.

      Tech Tips

      The thrust washer thickness is 2.43 to 2.48 mm (0.0957 to 0.0976 in.).

  14. INSPECT CRANKSHAFT OIL CLEARANCE


    1. Check the crankshaft journal and crankshaft bearing for pitting and scratches.

    2. Install the crankshaft bearing.

      Click here

    3. Clean each main journal and crankshaft bearing.

    4. Place the crankshaft on the cylinder block sub-assembly.

      Lay a strip of Plastigage across each journal.

    6. Confirm the front marks and number marks and place the crankshaft bearing caps on the cylinder block sub-assembly.

      Tech Tips

      A number mark is stamped on each main bearing cap to indicate the installation position.

    9. Measure the Plastigage at its widest point.

      Tech Tips

      If replacing a crankshaft bearing, select a new one with the same number. If the number of the crankshaft bearing cannot be determined, calculate the correct crankshaft bearing number by adding together the numbers imprinted on the cylinder block sub-assembly and crankshaft. Then select a new crankshaft bearing with the calculated number according to the chart below. There are 4 sizes of standard crankshaft bearings, marked "1", "2", "3" or "4" accordingly.


      • Example:

        Cylinder block sub-assembly "3" + Crankshaft "5" = Total number 8 (Use crankshaft bearing "3")

  15. INSPECT CRANKSHAFT BEARING CAP SET BOLT

      Using a vernier caliper, measure the length of the crankshaft bearing cap set bolt from the seat to the end.

      Standard length
      84.3 to 85.7 mm (3.3189 to 3.3740 in.)
      Maximum length

      If the length is more than the maximum, replace the crankshaft bearing cap set bolt with a new one.

    2. Using a vernier caliper, measure the diameter of the threaded portion of the crankshaft bearing cap set bolt at its thinnest point shown in the illustration.

      Standard diameter
      9.77 to 9.96 mm (0.3846 to 0.3921 in.)
      Minimum diameter
      9.1 mm (0.3583 in.)

      If the diameter is less than the minimum, replace the crankshaft bearing cap set bolt with a new one.

  16. INSPECT NO. 1 OIL NOZZLE SUB-ASSEMBLY


    1. A01M21Q

      Push the check valve with a pin to check if it is stuck.

      If stuck, replace the No. 1 oil nozzle sub-assembly.

    2. Push the check valve with a pin to check if it moves smoothly.

      If it does not move smoothly, clean or replace the No. 1 oil nozzle sub-assembly.

    3. A01M051N04

      Apply air into A. Check that air does not leak through B.

      If air leaks, clean or replace the No. 1 oil nozzle sub-assembly.

    4. A01LX87N03

      Push the check valve while applying air into A. Check that air passes through B.

      If air does not pass through B, clean or replace the No. 1 oil nozzle sub-assembly.
