PROCEDURE


  1. INSTALL SPARK PLUG TUBE

      *a Protrusion Height
      *b Mark

      Using paint, mark the standard position from the edge.

      Standard protrusion height
      88.7 to 90.2 mm (3.492 to 3.551 in.)
    2. A01D3RIC05
      *a Adhesive

      Apply adhesive to the spark plug tube where it will be pressed into the cylinder head.

      Adhesive
      Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1324, Three Bond 1324 or equivalent
    3. A01D57IC03
      *a Mark
      *b Protrusion Height
      *c Wooden Block
      *d Press

      Using a press and wooden block, install the spark plug tube to the specified protrusion height.

      Standard protrusion height
      88.7 to 90.2 mm (3.492 to 3.551 in.)

      Note


      • Install the spark plug tube within 3 minutes of applying adhesive.

      • Do not start the engine within 1 hour after installation.

      • Do not deform the spark plug tube.

      • Be careful not to drip the adhesive.

  2. INSTALL VALVE SPRING SEAT


    1. Install the valve spring seats to the cylinder head sub-assembly.

  3. INSTALL VALVE STEM OIL SEAL

      *d Black

      Apply a light coat of engine oil to new valve stem oil seals.

      Note

      Pay close attention when installing the intake and exhaust valve stem oil seals. Installing the intake oil seal to the exhaust side or installing the exhaust valve stem oil seal to the intake side may cause installation problems later.

      Tech Tips

      The intake valve stem oil seal is gray and the exhaust valve stem oil seal is black.

      Using SST, push in the valve stem oil seals.

      Note

      Make sure to use SST, or the valve stem oil seals may be damaged or improperly seated.

  4. INSTALL INTAKE VALVE

    Type A and Type B can be distinguished by the shape of the compression spring.

    1. Type A:


      1. A01D3UVC02
        *a 30 mm (1.18 in.) or more

        Sufficiently apply engine oil to the tip area of the intake valve shown in the illustration.

      2. Install the intake valve, compression spring and valve spring retainer to the cylinder head sub-assembly.

        Note

        Install the same parts to their original positions.

      3. A01D4KOC09
        *a Wooden Block

        Using SST and wooden blocks, compress the compression spring and install the 2 valve spring retainer locks.

      4. A01D6EG

        Using a plastic-faced hammer, lightly tap the intake valve stem tip to ensure a proper fit.

        Note


        • Be careful not to damage the intake valve stem tip.

        • Be careful not to tap the retainer.

    2. Type B:


      1. A01D3UVC02
        *a 30 mm (1.18 in.) or more

        Sufficiently apply engine oil to the tip area of the intake valve shown in the illustration.

      2. A01D5I3C01
        *1 Compression Spring
        *2 Valve Spring Retainer
        *3 Cylinder Head Sub-assembly
        *4 Upper Side

        Install the intake valve, compression spring and valve spring retainer to the cylinder head sub-assembly.

        Note


        • Install the compression spring with its taper side facing upward (towards the valve spring retainer)

        • Install the same parts to their original positions.

      3. A01D5VAC01
        *a Wooden Block

        Using SST and wooden blocks, compress the compression spring and install the 2 valve spring retainer locks.

      4. A01D4PW

        Using a plastic-faced hammer, lightly tap the intake valve stem tip to ensure a proper fit.

        Note


        • Be careful not to damage the intake valve stem tip.

        • Be careful not to tap the retainer.

  5. INSTALL EXHAUST VALVE

    Type A and Type B can be distinguished by the shape of the compression spring.

      2. Install the exhaust valve, compression spring and valve spring retainer to the cylinder head sub-assembly.

        Note

        Install the same parts to their original positions.

        Using SST and wooden blocks, compress the compression spring and install the 2 valve spring retainer locks.

      4. A01D653

        Using a plastic-faced hammer, lightly tap the exhaust valve stem tip to ensure a proper fit.

        Note


        • Be careful not to damage the exhaust valve stem tip.

        • Be careful not to tap the retainer.

    2. Type B:

        *a 30 mm (1.18 in.) or more

        Sufficiently apply engine oil to the tip area of the exhaust valve shown in the illustration.

        *1 Compression Spring
        *2 Valve Spring Retainer
        *3 Cylinder Head Sub-assembly
        *4 Upper Side

        Install the exhaust valve, compression spring and valve spring retainer to the cylinder head sub-assembly.

        Note


        • Install the compression spring with its taper side facing upward (towards the valve spring retainer)

        • Install the same parts to their original positions.

        *a Wooden Block

        Using SST and wooden blocks, compress the compression spring and install the 2 valve spring retainer locks.

        Using a plastic-faced hammer, lightly tap the exhaust valve stem tip to ensure a proper fit.

        • Be careful not to tap the retainer.

  6. INSTALL VALVE STEM CAP


    1. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the valve stem caps.

    2. Install the valve stem caps to the cylinder head sub-assembly.
