COOLING FAN ECU ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK COOLING FAN SYSTEM

    1. Set the vehicle in the following conditions:

      1. The ignition switch is off.

      2. The coolant temperature is less than 92°C (198°F).

      3. The battery voltage is between 11 and 14 V.

      4. The A/C switch is off.

    2. Connect the pickup of a clamp-on ammeter over one of the two wires for the cooling fan motor.

    3. Turn the ignition switch to ON and wait for approximately 10 seconds. Check that the fan is not operating.

    4. Start the engine. Check that the fan is not operating with the engine idling.

      Tech Tips

      • Make sure that the radiator coolant temperature is less than 92°C (198°F).

      • Turn the A/C switch off.

    5. Check that the fan operates when the A/C switch is turned on.

    6. Measure the current while the motor is turning.

      Standard Current
      Item Condition Specified Condition
Cooling fan motor Battery voltage applied at 20°C (68°F) 7.4 to 10.9 A

      Tech Tips

The coolant temperature should be less than 92°C (198°F).

    7. Check that the fan operates when the water temperature sensor connector is disconnected.

    8. Measure the current while the motor is turning.

After the engine is warmed up, check that the fan operates as shown in the illustration below.

      Tech Tips

      • The coolant temperature at which the fan starts operating is approximately 94°C (201°F).

      • This system can also be checked using the GTS.

Enter the following menus items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Coolant Temp.
