STOP AND START SYSTEM SYSTEM DESCRIPTION


  1. STOP AND START CONTROL

    The stop and start system operates according to the following conditions, achieving appropriate engine stop and start control together with safe and smooth driving characteristics.


    1. When all of the conditions in the following table have been met, the engine is stopped by stop and start system control.

      2. The integrated current value has increased to 0 A-sec or higher at least once after ignition switch ON:

        The engine is stopped until the following conditions are not met:


        • -6451 A-sec or higher: The battery charge is sufficient and the battery temperature is -1°C (30.2°F) or higher and below 70°C (158°F)

        • -1152 A-sec or higher: The battery charge is insufficient or the battery temperature is below -1°C (30.2°F) or 70°C (158°F) or higher

      Air Conditioning Other than when stop and start control is prohibited
      Heater

      Once of the following conditions is met:


      • The blower switch is off

      • The blower switch is on when the ambient temperature is 11°C (51.8°F) or higher or the engine coolant temperature is 46°C (114.8°F) or higher

      • 0 to 20 seconds after the engine is restarted by stop and start control, and the air conditioning switch is off, or the blower switch is off.

      Steering Wheel Steering wheel is neutral.

      Tech Tips


      • *1: When the battery temperature is -15°C (5°F) or less, or 75°C (167°F) or higher, the stop and start control is prohibited. When the battery temperature returns to -10°C (14°F) or higher, or 70°C (158°F) or less, stop and start control is permitted.

    2. When the engine is stopped by stop and start control, and any of the following conditions are met, the engine will restart.

  2. SYSTEM PROHIBITION CONTROL

    The engine stop and start ECU prohibits stop and start control by the stop and start system according to the table below. The prohibition conditions are specified for each system.

    Defogger: All of the following conditions have been met:


    1. Blower switch is on

    2. 0 to 20 seconds after the engine is restarted by stop and start control when the ambient temperature is -7°C (19.4°F) or higher and the blower switch and air conditioning switch are on


    1. Fogging of windows

    2. Air conditioning performance decreases

    3. Odor from air vents


    1. Blower switch is off

    2. 0 to 20 seconds have passed after restarting the engine by the stop and start control or the air conditioning switch is off, or blower switch is off.

    • Heavy electrical load

    • High stop and start rate (Time that engine stopped by stop and start control is long)

    Battery integrated current* value is more than a certain level.


    1. 0 A-sec or higher: After engine start by ignition switch operation

    2. Either of the following integrated current conditions is met:


      • -5299 A-sec or higher: The battery charge is sufficient and the battery temperature is -1°C (30.2°F) or higher and below 70°C (158°F)

      • 0 A-sec or higher: The battery charge is insufficient or the battery temperature is below -1°C (30.2°F) or 70°C (158°F) or higher

    Tech Tips


    • *: Read the Data List item "Integrated Current" or "Oper Permission (Integrated Current)" when checking the integrated current value

    • When the cable is disconnected from the negative (-) battery terminal, stop and start control is prohibited for a certain amount of time. After connecting the cable, drive the vehicle until stop and start control is permitted (approximately 15 to 40 minutes).

    • Allow the engine to idle for 3 minutes after the engine warms up and check that the engine speed is within 50 rpm of the target idle speed.

  3. WARNING CONTROL

    If any of the following operations are performed while the engine is stopped due to stop and start control, the system will not restart the engine. The engine will change the mode from "stopped due to system control" to "stalled" or the driver will be warned using the buzzer.

  5. STOP AND START SYSTEM OPERATION

    Depending on the type of malfunction, stop and start control may be prohibited by the fail-safe function. The following table shows effects on the vehicle and areas to be inspected when there is a malfunction in the stop and start system.
