MONITOR DESCRIPTION

• The ECM optimizes the intake valve timing using the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system to control the intake camshaft. The VVT system includes the ECM, the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for intake camshaft) and the VVT controller (camshaft timing gear assembly). The ECM sends a target duty-cycle control signal to the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for intake camshaft). This control signal regulates the oil pressure supplied to the VVT controller. The VVT controller can advance or retard the intake camshaft.

• If the difference between the target and actual intake valve timing is large, and changes in the actual intake valve timing are small, the ECM interprets this as a VVT controller stuck malfunction and stores a DTC.

• Example:




1. It takes 5 seconds or more to change the valve timing by 5°CA (Condition "A").

2. After the above condition A is met, the OCV is forcibly activated (Condition "B").

3. After the above condition B is met, when the OCV is forcibly activated for 60 seconds or more, a DTC is stored (Condition "C").

• DTCs P0011 and P0021 (Advanced Cam Timing) is subject to 1 trip detection logic.

• DTCs P0012 and P0022 (Retarded Cam Timing) is subject to 2 trip detection logic.

• These DTCs indicate that the VVT controller cannot operate properly due to a camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for intake camshaft) malfunction or the presence of foreign objects in the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for intake camshaft).

MONITOR STRATEGY

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

2. Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.

3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation).

4. Turn the power switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

5. Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on [A].

6. Put the engine in inspection mode (maintenance mode) Click here.

7. Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher [B].

8. Accelerate the vehicle to 60 km/h (37 mph) or more by depressing the accelerator pedal for 10 seconds or more [C].

   CAUTION:

   When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.

   Tech Tips

   If the engine stops, further depress the accelerator pedal to restart the engine.

9. Idle the engine for 30 seconds or more [D].

10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes / Pending [E].

11. Read the pending DTCs.

    Tech Tips

    
    

    • If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

    • If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

12. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.

13. Input the DTC: P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022.

14. Check the DTC judgment result.

    • If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.

    • If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.

    • If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or N/A, perform steps [F] through [H].

15. Accelerate the vehicle to 60 km/h (37 mph) or more by depressing the accelerator pedal for 10 seconds or more [F].

    CAUTION:

    When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.

16. Idle the engine for 30 seconds or more [G].

17. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes / Pending [H].

18. Read the pending DTCs.

    • If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

    • If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

19. Check the DTC judgment result again.

    • If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.

    • If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.

    • If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or N/A, perform the following procedure.

PROCEDURE

1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022)

   
   

   1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

   2. Turn the power switch on (IG).

   3. Turn the GTS on.

   4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

   5. Read the DTCs.

      Tech Tips

      If any DTCs other than P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING GTS (CONTROL THE VVT LINEAR (BANK 1 OR 2))

   
   

   1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

   2. Turn the power switch on (IG).

   3. Turn the GTS on.

   4. Put the engine in inspection mode (maintenance mode) Click here.

   5. Start the engine.

   6. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1) or Control the VVT Linear (Bank 2).

   7. Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly using the GTS.

   2. Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.

      • P0011, P0021 is output:

        Clear the DTC without using the GTS.

      • P0012, P0022 is output:

        Clear the DTC with using the GTS.

   4. Turn the power switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

   5. Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.

   6. Put the engine in inspection mode (maintenance mode) Click here.

   7. Start the engine and warm it up.

   8. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern.

   9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes / Pending.

   10. Read the pending DTCs.

       Tech Tips

       DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 may be stored when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. The DTC will remain set even if the system returns to normal after a short time. Those foreign objects may then be captured by the oil filter.

4. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE OR JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN)

   
   

   1. Remove the cylinder head cover sub-assemblies RH and LH.

      

   2. Turn the crankshaft to align the timing marks of the crankshaft.

   3. Align the notch of the crankshaft pulley to the "0" position.

   4. Check if the timing marks of the camshaft pulley and camshaft bearing cap align.

   5. Turn the crankshaft clockwise 360° if the timing marks do not align. Check if they align once again.

      The timing marks of the camshaft pulley and the camshaft bearing cap align when the notch of the crankshaft pulley is in the "0" position.

   6. Reinstall the cylinder head cover sub-assemblies RH and LH.

6. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER AND OIL PIPE

   
   

   1. Remove the No. 1 oil pipe or No. 2 oil pipe.

      

   2. Remove the oil control valve filter RH or oil control valve filter LH.

   3. Check that the oil control valve filter and oil pipe are not clogged.

      OK
      The oil control valve filter and oil pipe are not clogged.

   4. Reinstall the oil control valve filter RH or oil control valve filter LH.

   5. Reinstall the No. 1 oil pipe or No. 2 oil pipe.
