SFI SYSTEM, Diagnostic DTC:P0505

DTC Code DTC Name
P0505 Idle Control System Malfunction

DESCRIPTION

The idle speed is controlled by the Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS). The ETCS is comprised of: 1) one valve type throttle body; 2) the throttle actuator, which operates the throttle valve; 3) the throttle position sensor, which detects the opening angle of the throttle valve; 4) the accelerator pedal position sensor, which detects the accelerator pedal position; and 5) the ECM, which controls the ETCS. Based on the target idle speed, the ECM controls the throttle actuator to provide the proper throttle valve opening angle.

  • ETCS

  • Air induction system

  • PCV hose connection

  • ECM

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

The ECM monitors the idling speed and idling air flow volume to conduct Idle Speed Control (ISC). The ECM determines that the ISC system is malfunctioning if the following condition is met:

  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  2. Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the intelligent tester on.

  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure) Click here.

  4. Turn the power switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

  5. Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the intelligent tester on [A].

  6. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Primary / Coolant Temp.

  7. Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature is 70°C(158°F) or higher with all the accessories off [B].

  8. Turn the power switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds [C].

  9. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal and wait for 1 minute.

  10. Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the intelligent tester on [D].

  11. Put the engine in inspection mode (maintenance mode) Click here.

  12. Turn the power switch on (READY) and race the engine for 5 seconds with the shift lever in P [E].

    Tech Tips

In order to keep the idling stable, turn off the A/C and all other electric loads and do not perform any shift operations.

  13. Allow the engine to idle for 5 minutes or more [F].

    Tech Tips

In order to keep the idling stable, turn off the A/C and all other electric loads and do not perform any shift operations.

  14. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC [G].

  15. Read the pending DTCs.

    Tech Tips

    • If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

    • If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

  16. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.

  17. Input the DTC: P0505.

  18. Check the DTC judgment result.

    • Perform driving pattern after confirming DTC enabling conditions

    N/A
    • Unable to perform DTC judgment

    • Number of DTCs which do not fulfill DTC preconditions has reached ECU memory limit

    Tech Tips

    • If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.

    • If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.

    • If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or N/A, perform steps [D] and [F].

  19. Accelerate the vehicle to a speed of 10 km/h (6.25 mph) or more, and then decelerate to a stop [H].

  20. Race the engine for 5 seconds or more with the shift lever in P, and then allow the engine to idle for 20 seconds or more [I].

  21. Repeat step [H] and [I] 10 times.

  22. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

  23. Read the pending DTCs.

    Tech Tips

    • If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

    • If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

  24. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness [J].

  25. Input the DTC: P0505.

  26. Check the DTC judgment result.

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

Tech Tips

  • The following conditions may also cause DTC P0505 to be set:

    1. The floor carpet overlapping onto the accelerator pedal, causing the accelerator pedal to be slightly depressed and therefore the throttle valve position to be slightly open.

    2. The accelerator pedal being not fully released.

  • Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0505)

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).

    3. Turn the tester ON.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

    5. Read the DTCs.
