| DTC Code | DTC Name |
|---|---|
| P0116 | Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range / Performance |
DESCRIPTION
A thermistor is built into the engine coolant temperature sensor and it changes its resistance value according to the engine coolant temperature.
The structure of the sensor and connection to the ECM is the same as that of the intake air temperature sensor.
| DTC Detection Drive Pattern | DTC Detection Condition | Trouble Area |
|---|---|---|
| With the engine coolant temperature below 60°C (140°F), start the engine and idle it for 5 minutes. Then drive the vehicle at a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) or more for a total of 5 minutes or more and check that the engine coolant temperature changes by 1°C (1.8°F) or more. | When engine is started cold and warmed up, the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change (2 trip detection logic). |
|
| After the warmed up engine is stopped and the next cold engine start is performed, the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change (2 trip detection logic) |

| P0116 | Coolant Temp |
Tech Tips
If DTC P0116 is stored, the following symptoms may appear:
Misfire
Combustion noise
Black smoke
White smoke
Lack of power
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
When a cold engine start is performed and then the engine is warmed up, if the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change, it is determined that a malfunction has occurred. If this is detected in 2 consecutive driving cycles, the MIL is illuminated and a DTC is stored.
If the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change after the warmed up engine is stopped and then the next cold engine start is performed, it is determined that a malfunction has occurred. If this is detected in 2 consecutive driving cycles, the MIL is illuminated and a DTC is stored.
CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT
Tech Tips
Read freeze frame data using the GTS. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
PROCEDURE
CHECK FOR ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0116)
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
Read the DTCs.

INSPECT THERMOSTAT
Remove the thermostat Click here.
Measure the valve opening temperature of the thermostat.
| Standard opening temperature |
|---|
| 80 to 84°C (176 to 183°F) |
Tech Tips
In addition to the above check, confirm that the valve is completely closed when the temperature is below the standard.

CONFIRM WHETHER MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY REPAIRED
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Coolant Temp.
Start the engine.
Run the engine at 2500 rpm with no load.
Check that "Coolant Temp" changes by 1°C (1.8°F) or more within 10 minutes while idling the engine.
