DESCRIPTION

P1229
DTC Detection Drive Pattern DTC Detection Condition Trouble Area
Idling for 60 seconds or more

The actual fuel pressure exceeds the target fuel pressure by 5000 kPa or higher for 30 seconds.

(1 trip detection logic)

  • Short in pre-stroke control valve circuit

  • Fuel supply pump assembly

  • Fuel pressure sensor (common rail assembly)

  • ECM

Related Data List
DTC No. Data List
P1229
  • Common Rail Pressure

  • Target Common Rail Pressure

Tech Tips

  • For more information on the fuel supply pump assembly (pre-stroke control valve) and common rail system, refer to System Description Click here.

  • When DTC P1229 is stored, check the internal fuel pressure of the common rail assembly by entering the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Common Rail Pressure, Target Common Rail Pressure.

When there is an operation malfunction in the fuel supply pump assembly ("Common Rail Pressure" is higher than "Target Common Rail Pressure" due to a stuck malfunction of the pre-stroke control valve), the value of "Injection Pressure Correction" decreases.

Refer to DTC P0627 Click here.

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

Note

After replacing the ECM, the new ECM needs registration (See page ) and initialization Click here.

Tech Tips

Read freeze frame data using the GTS. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK OTHER DTC OUTPUT

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.

    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

    4. Read the DTCs.

  2. READ VALUE USING GTS (COMMON RAIL PRESSURE AND TARGET COMMON RAIL PRESSURE)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.

    3. Start the engine and warm it up.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Common Rail Pressure and Target Common Rail Pressure.

    5. Check that the internal fuel pressure of the common rail is within the specification below.

      OK
Common Rail Pressure is within 5000 kPa of Target Common Rail Pressure when engine is idling after warm up the engine.

    OK

  3. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING GTS (ACTIVATE THE PRE-STROKE CONTROL VALVE)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Activate the Pre-stroke Control Valve

    5. Perform the Active Test and check that operation sounds can be heard from the pre-stroke control valve.

      Tech Tips

      • Perform this procedure with the engine stopped and check the operation sounds from outside the vehicle.

      • Check in a quiet location with the hood opened, as the operation sound is difficult to hear.

      • In order to distinguish between the operation sounds of other actuators, check by using the GTS to turn the Active Test Open and Close several times.

      OK
The operation sound is generated when performing the Active Test, and stops when finished.

  4. REPLACE FUEL FILTER ELEMENT ASSEMBLY

    1. Replace the fuel filter element assembly Click here.

  5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (PRE-STROKE CONTROL VALVE - ECM)

    1. Disconnect the pre-stroke control valve connector.

    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      r6-1 (+B) - C150-3 (PCV+) Always Below 1 Ω
      r6-2 (PCV) - C150-4 (PCV-) Always Below 1 Ω
r6-1 (+B) or C150-3 (PCV+) - Body ground and other terminals Always 10 kΩ or higher
r6-2 (PCV) or C150-4 (PCV-) - Body ground and other terminals Always 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Reconnect the pre-stroke control valve connector.

    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    OK

  6. REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

    1. Repair or replace the harness or connector.

  7. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING GTS (TEST THE FUEL LEAK)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Start the engine and turn the GTS on.

    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Test the Fuel Leak / Data List / Common Rail Pressure, Target Common Rail Pressure.

    4. Take a snapshot with the GTS during the Active Test.

    5. Measure the difference between the target fuel pressure (Target Common Rail Pressure) and the actual fuel pressure (Common Rail Pressure) when the "Test the Fuel Leak" Active Test is performed Click here.

      Tech Tips

In order to obtain an exact measurement, perform the Active Test 5 times and measure the difference once each time the Active Test is performed.

      Standard
The difference between the target fuel pressure and the actual fuel pressure 2 seconds after the Active Test starts is less than 10000 kPa.

      Tech Tips

      • "Target Common Rail Pressure" is the target fuel pressure controlled by the ECM.

      • "Common Rail Pressure" is the actual fuel pressure.
