STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY(for Power Tilt and Power Telescopic Steering Column) REMOVAL

  • Use the same procedure for RHD and LHD vehicles.

  • The procedure listed below is for LHD vehicles.

PROCEDURE


  1. FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD

  2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL


    1. Disable the AUTO TILT AWAY function by changing the customize parameter Click here.

      Note

      Record the current customize parameter setting (whether the AUTO TILT AWAY function is enabled or disabled) in order to restore the current setting after finishing the operation.

      Tech Tips

      Performing the above operation causes the AUTO TILT AWAY function to be disabled when the engine switch is turned off.

    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Operate the tilt and telescopic switch to fully extend and lower the steering column assembly.

    3. Turn the engine switch off and disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

      CAUTION:

      Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

      Note

      When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected Click here.

  3. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY

  4. REMOVE LOWER STEERING COLUMN COVER

      Remove the 3 screws.

      *1 Push Area

      While pressing the push area shown in the illustration to detach the 4 claws, slightly lower steering column cover.

      Note

      Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch.

  5. REMOVE UPPER STEERING COLUMN COVER

      *1 Meter Hood Spacer

      Detach the 4 clips and 2 claws remove the meter hood spacer.

    2. Detach the claw and 2 guide pin remove the upper steering column cover from the steering column assembly..

  6. REMOVE COMBINATION SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY


    1. Disconnect the connectors from the combination switch with spiral cable sub-assembly.

      Detach the 3 claws and remove the combination switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.

  7. REMOVE LOWER NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL AIRBAG ASSEMBLY (w/ Driver Side Knee Airbag)

  8. REMOVE LOWER INSTRUMENT PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY (w/o Driver Side Knee Airbag)

  9. REMOVE WIRE HARNESS PROTECTOR AND WIRE HARNESS

      Detach the 2 claws and 2 harness clamps, disconnect the wire harness protector and wire harness.

  10. REMOVE NO. 3 AIR DUCT SUB-ASSEMBLY

  11. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY

        Put matchmarks on the steering actuator and steering column.

    2. w/o VGRS:

        Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft and the steering column.

    3. Remove the bolt.

      Remove the 4 nuts and steering column.

  12. DISCONNECT STEERING ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY

  13. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY (w/ VGRS)

      Remove the 4 bolts and nut with the steering column hole cover from the vehicle.

  14. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY (w/o VGRS)

      Hold the clamp with needle nose pliers, then insert a screwdriver and turn it in the direction shown in the illustration to remove the clamp of the steering column hole cover.

      Remove the 4 bolts and nut with the steering column hole cover from the vehicle.

  15. DISCONNECT NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT

      Loosen the bolt and remove the No. 2 intermediate shaft.

      Note

      It is possible to install the intermediate shaft to the same position it was removed from without placing matchmarks due to the dust cover part labeled A. Therefore, do not remove the dust cover from the steering link.

      Tech Tips

      If the dust cover is removed/installed or replaced, place matchmarks on the dust cover and steering link.
