PRE-HEATING SYSTEM ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK ILLUMINATION TIME OF GLOW INDICATOR LIGHT

    1. Check the light illumination duration.

      1. Turn the ignition switch to ON and measure the light illumination time.

        Light illumination time

        °C (°F)

        *3 Light Illumination Time - -

        • If the result is not as specified, check the ECM, engine coolant temperature sensor, glow plug assembly and glow relay.

        Tech Tips

Actual light illumination duration may vary slightly from the graph.

      2. Turn the ignition switch off.

  2. CHECK PRE-HEATING

    1. Inspect the pre-heating time.

      1. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Measure how long it takes for the battery voltage to be applied to the glow plugs.

        Standard Pre-Heating Time
        Engine Coolant Temperature Specified Condition
        40°C (104°F) or higher 1 second
        Below 40°C (104°F)

        See graph*

        (Maximum: 21 seconds)

        Tech Tips

*: The pre-heating time changes depending on the battery voltage.

        • If the result is not as specified, check the ECM, engine coolant temperature sensor, glow plug assembly and glow relay.

      2. Turn the ignition switch off.

      *a No. 1 Glow Relay
      *b No. 2 Glow Relay

Remove the No. 1 glow relay (GLOW 1) from the engine room relay block.

    2. Remove the No. 2 glow relay (GLOW 2) from the engine room relay block.

    3. After the engine starts, measure the time duration that battery voltage remains present.
