DESCRIPTION

The idle speed is controlled by the electronic throttle control system. The electronic throttle control system is comprised of: 1) the one valve type throttle body assembly; 2) a throttle actuator, which operates the throttle valve; 3) a throttle position sensor, which detects the opening angle of the throttle valve; 4) an accelerator pedal position sensor, which detects the accelerator pedal position; and 5) the ECM, which controls the electronic throttle control system. Based on the target idle speed, the ECM controls the throttle actuator to provide the proper throttle valve opening angle.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

The ECM monitors the idling speed and idling air flow volume to conduct Idle Speed Control (ISC). The ECM determines that the ISC system is malfunctioning if the following condition is met:

TYPICAL MALFUNCTION THRESHOLDS

Both of following conditions A and B met -
A. Frequency that both of following conditions (a) and (b) met 5 times or more
(a) Engine speed - Target engine speed

Less than -100 rpm, or more than 150 rpm (A/C off and NSW off)

Less than -100 rpm, or more than 200 rpm (A/C on or NSW on)

(b) Vehicle condition Stopped after being driven at 10 km/h (6.25 mph) or more
B. Either condition is met (c) or (d)
(c) IAC flow rate learned value Lower limit or upper limit
(d) Amount of change of IAC flow rate learned value exceeds threshold

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  2. Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the tester on.

  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure).

  4. Turn the power switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

  5. Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the tester on [A].

  6. Put the engine in inspection mode (maintenance mode) Click here.

  7. Start the engine and drive the vehicle until the coolant temperature reaches 70°C (158°F) or higher with all the accessories switch off [B].

  8. Turn the power switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

  9. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.

  10. Reconnect the cable to the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.

  11. Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the tester on.

  12. Put the engine in inspection mode (maintenance mode) Click here.

  13. Start the engine and rev the engine for 5 seconds with the park (P) selected [C].

  14. Idle the engine for 5 minutes or more [D].

    Tech Tips

    In order to keep the idling stable, turn off the A/C and all other electric loads and do not perform any shift operations.

  15. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC [E].

  16. Read the pending DTCs.

    Tech Tips


    • If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

    • If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

  17. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.

  18. Input the DTC: P0505.

  19. Check the DTC judgment result.

    Tech Tips


    • If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.


    • If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.


    • If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or N/A, perform steps [F] through [I].

  20. Accelerate the vehicle to 10 km/h (6.25 mph) or more [F].

    CAUTION:

    When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.

  21. Stop the vehicle and rev the engine for 5 seconds with the park (P) selected [G].

  22. Idle the engine for 20 seconds or more [H].

  23. Repeat the steps [F] through [H] 10 times.

  24. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC [I].

  25. Read the pending DTCs.

    Tech Tips


    • If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

    • If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

  26. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.

  27. Input the DTC: P0505.

  28. Check the DTC judgment result.

Tech Tips


  • The following conditions may also cause DTC P0505 to be stored:


    1. The floor carpet overlapping slightly onto the accelerator pedal, causing the accelerator pedal to be slightly depressed and therefore the throttle valve position to be slightly open.

    2. The accelerator pedal being not fully released.

  • Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE


  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0505)


    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).

    3. Turn the tester on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

    5. Read the DTCs.

      Result Proceed to
      DTC P0505 is output A
      DTC P0505 and other DTCs are output B

      If any DTCs other than P0505 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

  2. CHECK PCV HOSE CONNECTIONS

  3. CHECK INTAKE SYSTEM


    1. Check the intake system for vacuum leaks Click here.

  4. INSPECT THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY (THROTTLE VALVE)


    1. Check for contamination between the throttle valve and the housing and then check that the throttle valve moves smoothly.

      Throttle valve is not contaminated with foreign objects and moves smoothly.

  5. CONFIRM WHETHER MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY REPAIRED


    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).

    3. Turn the tester on.

    4. Clear the DTCs Click here.

    5. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern.

    6. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC / Pending.

    7. Read the pending DTCs.
