STEERING GEAR INSPECTION

PROCEDURE

  1. INSPECT TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY LH

    1. A004Y97

Secure the tie rod end sub-assembly LH in a vise.

      Note

      Do not overtighten the vise.

    2. Install the nut to the stud bolt.

    3. Flip the ball joint back and forth 5 times.

    4. Set a torque wrench to the nut, turn the ball joint continuously at a rate of 2 to 4 seconds per turn, and check the turning torque on the 5th turn.

      Standard Turning Torque
      0.3 to 1.9 N*m (3 to 19 kgf*cm, 3 to 17 in.*lbf)

If the turning torque is not within the specified range, replace the tie rod end sub-assembly LH with a new one.

  2. INSPECT TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY RH

    Tech Tips

Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

  3. INSPECT TOTAL PRELOAD

    Note

Inspect the total preload in a no-load condition by removing the tie rod end sub-assembly RH and LH, and steering rack boots.

    1. A004WQ2E02

Install SST to the pinion shaft and turn it left and right 5 times or more.

      SST

      Text in Illustration
      *A for LHD
      *a for Type A
      *b for Type B

Set a torque wrench to SST and turn the pinion shaft continuously at a rate of 4 to 6 seconds per turn to inspect the total preload of the steering gear assembly.

      Standard Preload (for LHD)
Steering Gear Assembly Type Standard Preload
      for Type A 0.8 to 1.2 N*m (9 to 12 kgf*cm, 8 to 10 in.*lbf)
      for Type B 1.05 to 1.65 N*m (11 to 16 kgf*cm, 10 to 14 in.*lbf)
      Standard Preload (for RHD)
      0.8 to 1.2 N*m (9 to 12 kgf*cm, 8 to 10 in.*lbf)

      Note

Inspect the total preload around the steering rack center position.

If the total preload is not within the specified range, replace the steering gear assembly with a new one.
