AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SYSTEM, Diagnostic DTC:P0985, P0986

DTC Code DTC Name
P0985 Shift Solenoid "E" Control Circuit Low (Shift Solenoid Valve SR)
P0986 Shift Solenoid "E" Control Circuit High (Shift Solenoid Valve SR)

DESCRIPTION

Based on the on-off combinations of the SL1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, SLT, SLU, SL and SR solenoids, the TCM performs gear shifts from 1st gear to 8th gear. If a circuit related to a solenoid valve is open or shorted, the TCM uses the fail-safe function to turn other solenoid valves on or off. If all solenoid valves are malfunctioning, only the mechanical fluid pressure circuit will function and the system will change to a manual transmission. If an open or short has occurred, the TCM cuts power to the malfunctioning solenoid valve.

DTC Code DTC Detection Condition Trouble Area
P0985 TCM detects a short in the solenoid valve SR circuit 2 times when solenoid valve SR is operated (1 trip detection logic)
  • Shift solenoid valve SR

  • Transmission wire

  • Harness and connector

  • TCM

P0986 TCM detects an open circuit in the solenoid valve SR circuit 2 times when solenoid valve SR is operated (1 trip detection logic)
  • Shift solenoid valve SR

  • Transmission wire

  • Harness and connector

  • TCM

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

These DTCs indicate an open or short in the shift solenoid valve SR circuit. When there is an open or short circuit in any shift solenoid valve circuit, the TCM detects the problem, illuminates the MIL and stores the DTC. When shift solenoid valve SR is on, if its resistance is 8 Ω or less, the TCM determines that there is a short in the shift solenoid valve SR circuit.

When the shift solenoid valve SR is off, if its resistance is 100 kΩ or higher, the TCM determines that there is an open circuit in the shift solenoid valve SR circuit Click here.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK HARNESS AND TRANSMISSION WIRE (TRANSMISSION WIRE - TCM, TRANSMISSION WIRE (SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SR))

    1. A001EPPE01
*1 Rear view of wire harness connector: (to TCM)

      Disconnect the E7 TCM connector.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E7-17 (SR) - Body ground Always 11 to 15 Ω

    NG
    OK
  2. REPLACE TCM

    1. Replace the TCM Click here.

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (TRANSMISSION WIRE - TCM)

    1. Disconnect the E50 transmission wire connector.

      A001CF3E05
*1 Front view of wire harness connector: (to Transmission Wire)
*2 Rear view of wire harness connector: (to TCM)
    2. Disconnect the E7 TCM connector.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E50-18 (SR) - E7-17 (SR) Always Below 1 Ω
E50-18 (SR) or E7-17 (SR) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG
    OK
  4. INSPECT SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SR

    1. A001F3VE01
      *1 Shift Solenoid Valve SR

Remove shift solenoid valve SR Click here.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
Shift solenoid valve SR connector - Shift solenoid valve SR body 20°C (68°F) 11 to 15 Ω
    3. Connect the battery's positive (+) lead to the terminal of the solenoid valve connector, and the negative (-) lead to the solenoid body. Then check that the valve moves and makes an operating noise.

      OK
