INSPECT LIGHTING TIME OF GLOW INDICATOR LIGHT

    Note:

Turn the ignition switch off for 60 seconds before performing this inspection.

    1. A003C4RE02

Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, and measure the lighting time.

      Lighting time
      Refer to the chart graph

    INSPECT PRE-HEATING

    Note:

Turn the ignition switch off for 60 seconds before performing this inspection.

    1. A003AS2E01

Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, measure the time when the battery voltage is applied to the glow plugs.

      Pre-Heating time
      Engine coolant temperature Pre-Heating time
      40°C or more 1 sec.
40°C or less Refer to the chart graph (15 sec. at the longest)
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position, and check the battery voltage is applied to the glow plugs.

    3. While cranking the engine, measure the time when the battery voltage is applied to the glow plugs.

      Pre-Heating time
      Engine coolant temperature Pre-Heating time
      40°C or more 1 sec.
40°C or less Refer to the chart graph (15 sec. at the longest)

    INSPECT AFTER GLOW TIME

    Note:

Turn the ignition switch off for 60 seconds before performing this inspection.

    1. Remove the glow relay.

    2. A003E92E01

After the engine starts, measure the length of time that battery voltage remains present.

      Standard After Glow Time
      Tester Connection Specified Condition
2 - Body ground Refer to the graph above*1

*1: After glow time changes depending on atmospheric pressure and engine coolant temperature.

If the result is not as specified, check the ECM, engine coolant temperature sensor, glow plug and glow relay.

    INSPECT GLOW PLUGS

    Note:

Turn the ignition switch off for 60 seconds before performing this inspection.

    1. A003AMPE01

Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the glow plug terminal and ground.

      Standard resistance
      Approx. 0.72Ωat 20°C (68°F)
      Note:
      • Do not damage the glow plug pipes as it could cause an open circuit or shorten life of the glow plugs.

      • Avoid getting oil and gasoline on the glow plug when cleaning.

      • During inspection, be sure to wipe any oil on the terminal and bakelite washer with a dry cloth.

      • Do not apply more than 11 V to the glow plug as it could cause an open circuit.
