REAR BRAKE INSPECTION

  1. INSPECT BRAKE DRUM INSIDE DIAMETER

    1. A003G7E

Using a brake drum gauge or equivalent, measure the inside diameter of the drum.

      Standard inside diameter
      Item Specified Condition
for 254 mm drum: 254 mm (10.000 in.)
for 295 mm drum: 295 mm (11.614 in.)
      Maximum inside diameter
      Item Specified Condition
for 254 mm drum: 256 mm (10.079 in.)
for 295 mm drum: 297 mm (11.692 in.)

      Tech Tips

If the inside diameter of the brake drum is more than the maximum, replace the brake drum.

  2. INSPECT BRAKE SHOES LINING THICKNESS

    1. A003CYU

Using a ruler, measure the thickness of the shoe lining.

      Standard thickness
      Item Specified Condition
for 254 mm drum: 5.1 mm (0.201 in.)
for 295 mm drum: 6.0 mm (0.236 in.)
      Minimum thickness
      1.0 mm (0.0394 in.)

      Tech Tips

If the lining thickness is less than the minimum thickness, or if there is severe, uneven wear, replace the brake shoe.

  3. INSPECT BRAKE DRUM AND BRAKE SHOE LINING FOR PROPER CONTACT

    1. A003EAR

Apply chalk to the inside surface of the drum, then grind drum on the brake shoe lining to fit.

      Tech Tips

If the contact between the drum and the shoe lining is improper, repair it using a brake shoe grinder or replace the brake shoe assembly.

  4. INSPECT BRAKE WHEEL CYLINDER

    1. Check the cylinder bore and the piston for rust or scoring.

      Tech Tips

If necessary, replace the wheel brake cylinder assembly.
