AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY REMOVAL


  1. DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL CABLE

  2. REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL LEVEL GAUGE SUB-ASSEMBLY


    1. A003G8M

      Remove the transmission oil level gage sub assembly from the transmission oil filler tube.

  3. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY NO.2

  4. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER NO.1

  5. REMOVE ENGINE SIDE UNDER COVER LH

  6. REMOVE ENGINE SIDE UNDER COVER RH

  7. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID


    1. A003AXXE01

      Drain the automatic transmission fluid and remove the drain plug and gasket.

    2. Install the drain plug with a new gasket.

      Torque:
      20 N*m  { 204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf }
  8. REMOVE PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY


    1. A003AD9E01

      Put matchmarks on both flanges.

    2. Remove the 4 nuts, bolts and washers.

      Tech Tips

      If the flange connection is hard to separate, temporarily tighten one nut only and evenly tap the flange with a brass bar and hammer to separate the propeller shaft assembly from the differential companion flange.

    3. Remove the propeller shaft assembly.

      Insert SST in the transmission to prevent oil leakage.

      Note

      Do not damage the oil seal.


      1. Use the following SST for the automatic transmission

  9. REMOVE EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY FRONT


    1. w/ Secondary air infection system:


      1. Disconnect the fuel ratio sensor connector.

      2. Remove the fuel ratio sensor. Click here

    2. For unleaded gasoline engine:


      1. Disconnect the oxygen sensor connector.

      2. Remove the oxygen sensor. Click here

    3. Remove the 4 bolts, 2 nuts, and 2 compression springs.

    4. Remove the 2 gaskets from the exhaust pipe assembly front.

    5. Disconnect the exhaust pipe support, and remove the exhaust pipe assembly front.

  10. REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY


    1. A003EFYE01

      Remove the 2 bolts transmission oil filler tube sub-assembly.

    2. Remove the O-ring from the oil filler tube sub-assembly.

  11. DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY


    1. A003GA5E05

      Remove the nut and disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the transmission control shaft lever assembly.

    2. Remove the clip and disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the transmission control cable bracket.

  12. REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET NO.1


    1. A003GFKE02

      Remove the 2 bolts and transmission control cable bracket to the automatic transmission assembly.

  13. REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY


    1. A003F81E01

      Remove the 2 bolts, then remove the ground cable and bracket.

    2. A003BABE02

      Remove the nut and disconnect the wire harness from terminal 30.

    3. Disconnect the terminal 50 connector from the starter assembly.

    4. Remove the 2 bolts and the starter assembly.

  14. DISCONNECT OIL COOLER TUBE


    1. Remove the 3 bolts and disconnect the 3 cooler tube clamps.

      Using a 17 mm union nut wrench, disconnect the 2 oil cooler tubes from the automatic transmission assembly.

  15. DISCONNECT CONNECTOR


    1. A003CDDE03

      Remove the heat insulator from the park/neutral position switch assembly with 2 bolts.

    2. A003C5VE04

      Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.

    3. A003GV7E02

      Disconnect the connector of speed sensor (SP2) connector and transmission wire connector.

    4. A003E9FE01

      Disconnect the connector of speed sensor (NCO) connectorand temperature sensor.

  16. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS


    1. A003C7GE01

      Remove the 3 bolts and disconnect the wire harness from the automatic transmission assembly .

  17. REMOVE DRIVE PLATE AND TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SETTING BOLT


    1. A003E2OE01

      Remove the flywheel housing dust seal from the automatic transmission assembly.

    2. A003CMVE01

      Remove the torque converter clutch setting bolts with 6 bolts.

  18. SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY


    1. A003CWEE01

      Support the automatic transmission assembly with a transmission jack.

  19. DISCONNECT ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR ASSEMBLY REAR


    1. A003DIG

      Disconnect the engine mounting insulator assembly rear with bolt, nut and 2 washers.

  20. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY


    1. A003CIJ

      Remove the automatic transmission assembly with 8 bolts.

  21. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR ASSEMBLY REAR


    1. A003GDKE01

      Remove the 4 bolts and engine mounting insulator assembly rear from the automatic transmission assembly.

  22. REMOVE BREATHER PLUG HOSE


    1. A003BCJE01

      Remove the breather plug hose from the automatic transmission assembly with a bolt.

  23. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY


    1. A003GP8E02

      Put matchmarks on the transmission case and torque converter assembly.

    2. Remove the torque converter assembly from the automatic transmission assembly.

  24. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY

      Inspect the one-way clutch.


      1. Install the SST so that it fits in the notch of the converter hub and the outer race of the one-way clutch.

      2. Install the SST (Stopper) from the sleeve of torque converter assembly and engage serration of stater slight washer.

      3. Stand up the torque converter and turn the SST (tool ).

        Standard
        Check if it rotates smoothly when turned clockwise and locks up when turned counter clockwise.
    2. A003EZ6E01

      Determine the condition of the torque converter clutch assembly.


      1. If the inspection result of the torque converter clutch assembly meets the following item, replace the torque converter clutch.

        Malfunction item
        Any metallic sound is heard from the torque converter clutch during stall test or when the shift lever is in the N position.
        The one-way clutch is free or locked in both directions.
        Fine powder exceeding the sample limit is identified in ATF. (See the sample.)

        Tech Tips


        • The sample shows the auto fluid of approximately 0.25 liters (0.26 US qts, 0.22 Imp, qts) that is taken out from the removed torque converter clutch.

    3. Replace the ATF in the torque converter clutch.


      1. If the ATF is discolored and/or has a foul odor, completely stir the ATF in the torque converter clutch and drain it with the installation face up.

      Clean and check the oil cooler and oil pipe line.


      1. If the torque converter clutch is inspected or exchange the ATF, is exchanged, clean the oil cooler and oil pipe line.

        Tech Tips


        • Spray compressed air of 196 kPa (2kgf/cm2, 28 psi) from the inlet hose.

        • If plenty of fine powders are identified in the ATF, add a new ATF using a bucket pump and clean it again.

      2. If the ATF is cloudy, inspect the oil cooler.
