STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY(for Manual Tilt and Manual Telescopic Steering Column) INSPECTION

PROCEDURE


  1. INSPECT PRELOAD


    1. Secure the steering column assembly in a vise.

    2. A004S6ZE05

      Using SST, turn the main shaft and measure the preload.

      SST
      09616-00011
      Standard preload
      0.9 to 1.5 N*m (9.3 to 14.8 kgf*cm, 8.0 to 12.8 in.*lbf)

      If the preload is not as specified, replace the steering column assembly.

      *1 Collar
      *2 Bushing

      Check that the 2 bushings are securely installed to the steering column assembly.

      Tech Tips

      If the bushings are missing or damaged, replace the steering column assembly with a new one.

    4. Inspect the capsules.

        Check that the 2 capsules are securely installed to the steering column assembly as shown in the illustration.

        Standard dimension
        A B
        More than 0 mm (0 in.) 5 to 10 mm (0.197 to 0.394 in.)

        If the capsules are not positioned as specified, replace the steering column assembly with a new one.

      2. Check the 2 capsules for deformation and damage.

        If either of the capsules is deformed, loose, missing or damaged, replace the steering column assembly with a new one.

  2. INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION (w/o Entry and Start System)

      Check that the steering lock mechanism is activated when the key is removed.

    2. A004PF0E01
      *1 LOCK

      Check that the steering lock mechanism is deactivated when the key is inserted and turned to the ACC position.

      Tech Tips

      If there is any abnormality, replace the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly or steering column upper bracket assembly.
