SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The electric parking brake system controls the parking brake cable by electrically loosening and tightening the cable with the actuator.
While the vehicle is stopped (the vehicle speed is 0 km/h (0 mph)), the parking brake locks and the PARK warning light turns on when the electric parking brake switch is pushed, and the parking brake releases and the PARK warning light turns off when the electric parking brake switch is pulled.
While the vehicle is being driven, the lock control only operates while the electric parking brake switch is being pushed. The release control operates immediately after the switch is released.
Tech Tips
When the electric parking brake switch is being pushed, the PARK warning light turns on and buzzer sounds.
for M/T:
Drive away release function:
The drive away release function detects the intention of the driver to start driving based on the operation of the shift lever, clutch pedal and accelerator pedal, and automatically releases the parking brake.
Ignition switch off automatic apply function (Auto mode):
When the driver turns the ignition switch off while the vehicle is stationary and auto mode is on, the parking brake is automatically set.
When the parking brake is completely set, the PARK warning light in the combination meter turns on.
Tech Tips
This function allows the parking brake to be applied without the driver having to operate the electric parking brake switch and helps to avoid forgetting to apply the parking brake.
Auto mode setting:
Tech Tips
The initial setting of auto mode upon vehicle delivery is ON.
Changing the auto mode setting from ON to OFF:
If the electric parking brake switch is pulled for 5 seconds, auto mode turns off, and the auto parking brake off indicator light (yellow indicator) in the combination meter turns on.
Changing the auto mode setting from OFF to ON:
If the electric parking brake switch is pushed for 5 seconds, auto mode turns on, and the auto parking brake off indicator light (yellow indicator) in the combination meter turns off.
Tech Tips
As the auto mode setting is stored by the electric parking brake ECU, it is not necessary to select the setting each time the ignition switch is turned to ON.
Conditions necessary for changing the auto mode setting:
The vehicle is stationary (vehicle speed is less than 3 km/h (1.8 mph)).
The ignition switch is ON.
Ignition switch off automatic apply function (Auto mode) inoperative warning function:
If the ignition switch off automatic apply function (Auto mode) is not operating normally, the user is warned using the multi-information display and a buzzer under the following conditions.
| IG Switch Condition | Parking Brake | Multi-information Display | Driver Side Door | Buzzer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ignition switch ON (engine start condition) → Ignition switch off | OFF | Parking brake application request displayed | CLOSE | 2 consecutive short beeps |
| Ignition switch ON (engine start condition) → Ignition switch off | OFF | Parking brake application request displayed | OPEN | Intermittent |
| *1 | Parking Brake | *2 | Multi-information Display |
| *3 | Driver Side Door | *4 | Buzzer |
| *a | ON | *b | OFF |
| *c | Parking brake application request displayed | *d | Not displayed |
| *e | OPEN | *f | CLOSE |
| *g | Ignition switch ON (engine start condition) → Ignition switch off | *h | 2 consecutive short beeps |
| *i | Intermittent | - | - |
Electric parking brake switch override.
If the electric parking brake switch is pulled while the ignition switch is being turned off, switch override goes into effect. As a result, the parking brake will not automatically operate even if auto mode is on.
COMPONENTS OPERATION
| Components | Function | |
|---|---|---|
| Parking brake with bracket actuator assembly | Electric parking brake ECU | Controls the electric parking brake system by utilizing several signals. |
| Motor | Operates depending on the ECU command so that the parking brake is applied or released. | |
| Tension sensor | Detects the parking brake cable force. | |
| Stroke sensor | Detects the stroke of the parking brake cable. | |
| Parking brake cable | Transfers the tension, which is created by the sliding of the spindle and shaft, to the rear brakes. For the shaft side, the cable is connected via the bearing so that the cable does not rotate together with the shaft. |
|
| Emergency release cable | Rotates the motor directly in case of an electric parking brake switch failure to allow the parking brake to be released manually. | |
| Yaw rate sensor | Detects the inclination of the slope where the vehicle stops. | |
| Electric parking brake switch |
|
|
| Brake system warning light (yellow indicator) | Turns on to inform the driver when an electric parking brake ECU failure occurs, or the operation is limited due to factors in other systems. | |
| Multi-information display |
|
|
| PARK warning light |
|
|
| Auto parking brake off indicator light (yellow indicator) (for M/T) | Turns on when auto mode is turned off. | |
| Brake pedal stroke sensor (Clutch pedal stroke sensor) (for M/T) |
|
|
| Park/neutral position switch (for M/T) | Detects if the shift lever is in neutral. | |
| Back-up light switch (for M/T) | Detects if the shift lever is in reverse. | |
| Skid control ECU | Receives the parking brake status information from the electric parking brake ECU and outputs the stop light signal and vehicle wheel speed signal to the electric parking brake ECU. | |
| ECM | Outputs the ECM information to the electric parking brake ECU. | |
| Buzzer (for M/T) | Warns the driver with 2 consecutive short beeps or an intermittent sound when the ignition switch off automatic apply function (Auto mode) is not operating normally. | |
