LIGHTING SYSTEM FAIL-SAFE CHART

  1. AFS (Adaptive Front-Lighting System) [w/ AFS]

If the headlight swivel ECU detects a malfunction in the automatic headlight beam level control system or intelligent AFS, it will take the actions indicated in the table below.

Malfunctioning Part Detection Condition Leveling Fail-safe Control Swivel Fail-safe Control Multi-information Display Warning DTC Output
Headlight Swivel Motor Headlight swivel motor communication error Continues control with both headlight leveling motors lower than the current position by 0.65°. Returns both headlight swivel motors to the front-facing position. Flashes Output

    • Open in circuit

    • Short in circuit

    • Overheated

    • Returns normal headlight swivel motors to the front-facing position.

    • Stops the malfunctioning swivel motor at the current position.

    Flashes Output
    Voltage malfunction Off Output
    Gear malfunction Flashes Output
Spiral with Sensor Cable Steering angle sensor signal malfunction Continues control. Returns both headlight swivel motors to the front-facing position. Flashes Output
Speed Sensor Speed sensor signal malfunction Continues control. After 5 seconds, returns both headlight swivel motors to the front-facing position. Flashes Output
Rear Height Control Sensor Rear height control sensor signal malfunction
    • Stops operation after returning the headlight motor to the initial position (system fails when the headlight motor is higher than the initial position).

    • Stops operation with the headlight motor at the current position (system fails when the headlight motor is lower than the initial position).

Returns both headlight swivel motors to the front-facing position. Flashes Output
    Source voltage malfunction Output
Headlight Leveling Motor Headlight leveling motor communication error

    Both side headlight leveling motors:

    • Stops operation after returning the headlight motor to the initial position (system fails when the headlight motor is higher than the initial position).

    • Stops operation with the headlight motor at the current position (system fails when the headlight motor is lower than the initial position).

Returns both headlight swivel motors to the front-facing position. Flashes Output

    Headlight leveling motor malfunction

    • Open in circuit

    • Short in circuit

    • Overheated

    Normal headlight leveling motor:

    • Stops operation after returning the headlight motor to the initial position (system fails when the headlight motor is higher than the initial position).

    • Stops operation with the headlight motor at the current position (system fails when the headlight motor is lower than the initial position).

    Abnormal side headlight leveling motor:

    • Stops at current position

    Flashes Output
    Voltage malfunction Off Output
    CAN Communication System

    Communication signal malfunction

    (Main body ECU)

    Continues control.

(Uses initial position when vehicle information not confirmed.)

    Continues control.

(Returns both headlight swivel motors to the front-facing position when vehicle information not confirmed.)

    Flashes Output

    Communication signal malfunction

    (Skid control ECU)

Judges that the vehicle speed is 0 km/h (0 mph) and continues control. Returns both headlight swivel motors to the front-facing position. Output

    Communication signal malfunction

    (Steering angle sensor)

    Continues control. Output
Headlight Swivel ECU Vehicle specifications unconfirmed Continues control. Continues control. Flashes Output
Rear height control sensor initialization unconfirmed

    Both headlight leveling motors:

    • Stop at the same position as when the vehicle is empty.

Returns both headlight swivel motors to the front-facing position. Blinks 6 times after ignition switch is turned from off to ON Output
  2. Automatic Light Control System

If the main body ECU (driver side junction block assembly) detects a malfunction in the rain sensor, the main body ECU (driver side junction block assembly) performs fail-safe control to prohibit automatic light control. If the low beam headlights and taillights are on, the lights will remain on until the light control switch is turned off.

  3. Automatic Headlight Beam Level Control System (w/o AFS)

The headlight leveling ECU operates in fail-safe mode if an abnormal condition such as those listed below has been detected.

Item Abnormality Detection Condition Return Condition Multi-information Display Warning
Height control sensor power source voltage Abnormal height control sensor power source voltage (4.6 V or less, or 6.25 V or more) is detected. Voltage of 4.61 to 6.24 V is detected Flashes
Height control sensor signal voltage Abnormal height control sensor signal voltage (0.25 V or less, or 4.75 V or more) is detected. Voltage of 0.26 to 4.74 V is detected
High power source voltage Abnormal high power source voltage (18.5 V or more) is detected. Voltage of 17.5 V or less is detected Off
Low power source voltage Abnormal low power source voltage (9.0 V or less) is detected. Voltage of 9.3 V or more is detected Off
Abnormal height control sensor signal during initialization Initialization is performed outside the valid range of the voltage for initialization. Initialization is successfully completed within the valid range of the voltage for initialization. Flashes
