| DTC Code | DTC Name |
|---|---|
| P0016 | Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A) |
| P0017 | Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor B) |
DESCRIPTION
In the VVT system, the appropriate intake and exhaust valve open and close timing is controlled by the ECM. The ECM performs intake and exhaust valve control by performing the following: 1) controlling the camshaft and camshaft oil control valve, and operating the camshaft timing gear; and 2) changing the relative positions of the gaps between the camshaft and crankshaft.
| DTC No. | Detection Condition | Trouble Area |
|---|---|---|
| P0016 | Deviation in crankshaft position sensor signal and VVT sensor (for intake camshaft (bank 1)) signal (2 trip detection logic) |
|
| P0017 | Deviation in crankshaft position sensor signal and VVT sensor (for exhaust camshaft (bank 1)) signal (2 trip detection logic) |
|
To monitor the correlation of the intake camshaft position and crankshaft position, the ECM checks the VVT learning value while the engine is idling. The VVT learning value is calibrated based on the camshaft position and crankshaft position. The intake valve timing is set to the most retarded angle while the engine is idling. If the VVT learning value is out of specified range in consecutive driving cycles, the ECM illuminates the MIL and sets the DTC P0016.
To monitor the correlation of the exhaust camshaft position and crankshaft position, the ECM checks the VVT learning value while the engine is idling. The VVT learning value is calibrated based on the camshaft position and crankshaft position. The exhaust valve timing is set to the most advanced angle while the engine is idling. If the VVT learning value is out of specified range in consecutive driving cycles, the ECM illuminates the MIL and sets the DTC P0017.
CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT
Tech Tips
Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
PROCEDURE
CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION P0016 OR P0017)
Connect an intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
Turn the tester on.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.
Read DTCs.
| Result | Proceed to |
|---|---|
| P0016 or P0017 | A |
| P0016 or P0017 and other DTCs | B |
Tech Tips
If any DTCs other than P0016 or P0017 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (OPERATE OIL CONTROL VALVE)
Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Start the engine.
Turn the tester on.
Inspect the oil control valve (for intake camshaft).
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1).
Check the engine speed when the oil control valve is operated using the intelligent tester with the engine coolant temperature is 50°C (122°F) or less.
Tech Tips
When performing the Active Test, the air conditioning should be on.
Engine coolant temperature when engine is started should be 30°C (86°F) or less.

CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0016 OR P0017)
Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
Turn the tester on.
Clear the DTCs.
Start the engine and warm it up.
Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the tester.
Allow the engine to idle for 5 minutes or more.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.
Read the DTCs.

| DTC is not output | A |
| DTC P0016 or P0017 is output | B |
Tech Tips
DTC P0016 or P0017 is output when foreign objects in engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will stay output for a short time even after the system returns to normal. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem.

INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR INTAKE OR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT)
Tech Tips
Inspect the specified oil control valve assembly (for intake camshaft or exhaust camshaft) in accordance with the inspection result of step 2.
| *1 | Component without harness connected (Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve) |
Remove the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for intake camshaft or exhaust camshaft).
Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
| Standard Resistance | ||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
| *1 | Component without harness connected: (OCV for Intake Camshaft or OCV for Exhaust Camshaft) |
| *2 | Valve moves |
Apply battery voltage to terminals of the oil control valve assembly (for intake camshaft or exhaust camshaft). Check the valve operation.

Tech Tips
There are no marks on the cylinder head to match-up for the purpose of checking valve timing. Valve timing can only be inspected by lining up the colored plates on the timing chain with the marks on the pulleys. It may be necessary to remove and re-install the chain to match-up the timing marks Click here.
