P0012 Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1)

DESCRIPTION

Tech Tips

If DTC P0011 or P0012 is output, check the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system.

The VVT system includes the ECM, oil control valve and VVT controller. The ECM sends a target duty-cycle control signal to the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. This control signal regulates the oil pressure applied to the VVT controller. Camshaft timing control is performed according to engine operating conditions such as the intake air volume, throttle valve position and engine coolant temperature. The ECM controls the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly, based on the signals transmitted by several sensors. The VVT controller regulates the intake camshaft angle using oil pressure through the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. As a result, the relative positions of the camshaft and crankshaft are optimized, the engine torque and fuel economy improve, and the exhaust emissions decrease under overall driving conditions. The ECM detects the actual intake valve timing using signals from the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors, and performs feedback control. This is how the target intake valve timing is verified by the ECM.

  4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on [A].

  6. Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher [B].

  7. Drive the vehicle at approximately 37 mph (60 km/h) for 10 minutes or more [C].

    CAUTION:

When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.

  8. Idle the engine for 3 minutes or more [D].

  9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes [E].

  10. Read the pending DTCs.

    Tech Tips

    • If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

    • If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

  11. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.

  12. Input the DTC: P0011 or P0012.

  13. Check the DTC judgment result.

    GTS Display Description
    NORMAL
    • DTC judgment completed

    • System normal

    ABNORMAL
    • DTC judgment completed

    • System abnormal

    INCOMPLETE
    • DTC judgment not completed

    • Perform driving pattern after confirming DTC enabling conditions

    N/A
    • Unable to perform DTC judgment

    • Number of DTCs which do not fulfill DTC preconditions has reached ECU memory limit

    Tech Tips

    • If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.

    • If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.

    • If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or N/A, perform steps [F] through [H].

  14. Repeat the pattern of accelerating the vehicle from rest to approximately 37 mph (60 km/h) and then decelerating the vehicle 10 to 15 times [F].

    CAUTION:

When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.

    Tech Tips

Depress the accelerator pedal by a large amount.

  15. Idle the engine for 3 minutes or more [G].

  16. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes [H].

  17. Read the pending DTCs.

    Tech Tips

    • If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

    • If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

  18. Check the DTC judgment result again.

    Tech Tips

    • If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.

    • If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

Note

DTC P0011 or P0012 may be stored when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. The DTC remain stored even if the system returns to normal after a short time. Foreign objects are filtered out by the oil filter.

Tech Tips

Read freeze frame data using the GTS. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0011 OR P0012)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

    5. Read the DTCs.

DTC P0011 or P0012 and other DTCs are output B

      Tech Tips

If any DTCs other than P0011 or P0012 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

  5. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011 OR P0012)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Turn the GTS on.

      Result
      Result Proceed to
      DTC is not output A
      DTC P0011 or P0012 is output B

      Tech Tips

DTC P0011 or P0012 is output when foreign objects in engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will remain stored for a short time even after the system returns to normal. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem.
