If any of the following DTCs are output, the ECM enters fail-safe mode to allow the vehicle to be driven temporarily.
| DTC Code | Component | Fail-Safe Operation | Fail-Safe Deactivation Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| P0011 and P0015 | VVT system |
|
Pass condition detected and then ignition switch off |
| P0031, P0032 and P101D | Air fuel ratio sensor heater | ECM turns off air fuel ratio sensor heater. | Ignition switch off |
| P0037, P0038 and P102D | Heated oxygen sensor heater | ECM turns off heated oxygen sensor heater. | Ignition switch off |
| P0102 and P0103 | Mass air flow meter | ECM calculates ignition timing according to engine speed and throttle valve position. | Pass condition detected |
| P0107 and P0108 | Vacuum sensor | Intake air pressure is adjusted using a value calculated according to the throttle valve opening angle and engine speed. Engine speed is limited to 3000 rpm or less. |
Pass condition detected |
| P0112 and P0113 | Intake air temperature sensor | ECM estimates intake air temperature to be 20°C (68°F). | Pass condition detected |
| P0115, P0117 and P0118 | Engine coolant temperature sensor | ECM estimates engine coolant temperature sensor to be 80°C (176°F). | Pass condition detected |
| P0136 | Heated oxygen sensor | Air fuel ratio feedback control is stopped. | Ignition switch off |
| P0120, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0220, P0222, P0223, P0604, P0606, P060A, P060B, P060D, P060E, P0657, P2102, P2103, P2111, P2112, P2118, P2119 and P2135 | Electronic throttle control system | ECM cuts off throttle actuator current and throttle valve is returned to 5.5° throttle position by return spring. ECM then adjusts engine output by controlling fuel injection (intermittent fuel-cut) and ignition timing in accordance with accelerator pedal opening angle to allow vehicle to continue at minimal speed*1. |
Pass condition detected and then ignition switch turned off |
| P0197 and P0198 | Engine oil temperature sensor | ECM estimates engine oil temperature to be -40°C (-40°F). | Pass condition detected |
| P0327 and P0328 | Knock sensor | ECM sets ignition timing to maximum retard. | Ignition switch off |
| P0351, P0352, P0353 and P0354 | Igniter | ECM cuts fuel. | Pass condition detected |
| P1049, P104A, P1055, P2646, P2647, P2648, P2649, P264A and U011B | VALVEMATIC system | Power to the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly is cut.*2 VVT(IN): The adjustable range is limited. VVT(EX): Fixed to a set value. |
Ignition switch off |
| P2120, P2121, P2122, P2123, P2125, P2127, P2128 and P2138 | Accelerator pedal position sensor | Accelerator pedal position sensor has 2 sensor circuits: Main and Sub. If either circuit malfunctions, ECM limits the engine output. If both circuits malfunction, ECM regards accelerator pedal as being released. As a result, throttle valve is closed and engine idles. |
Pass condition detected and then ignition switch turned off |
Note
*1: The vehicle can be driven slowly when the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and slowly. If the accelerator pedal is depressed quickly, the vehicle may speed up and slow down erratically.
*2: When the engine continues to run while power to the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly is cut, the VALVEMATIC duration gradually changes to the minimum duration. When the duration reaches the minimum, the vehicle speed cannot exceed 10 to 60 km/h (6 to 37 mph).
