PARKING BRAKE ASSEMBLY REASSEMBLY

  1. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE HOLD DOWN SPRING PIN (for 2WD)


    1. A01EJTV

      Install the No. 2 parking brake shoe hold down spring pin.

  2. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE HOLD DOWN SPRING PIN (for AWD)


    1. A01ELWT

      Install the No. 1 parking brake shoe hold down spring pin.

  3. INSTALL REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)

    Note

    Perform this procedure only when the No. 2 parking brake shoe hold down spring pin is replaced.

  4. INSTALL REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY (for AWD)

    Note

    Perform this procedure only when the No. 1 parking brake shoe hold down spring pin is replaced.

  5. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE HOLD DOWN SPRING PIN (for 2WD)

      Install the No. 1 parking brake shoe hold down spring pin.

  6. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE HOLD DOWN SPRING PIN (for AWD)

      Install the No. 2 parking brake shoe hold down spring pin.

  7. APPLY HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE


    1. Apply high temperature grease to the backing plate which makes contact with the shoe.

  8. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE GUIDE PLATE SET BOLT


    1. Apply adhesive to the threads of the parking brake shoe guide plate set bolt.

      Adhesive
      Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1344, Three Bond 1344 or equivalent
    2. A01EMBL

      Install the parking brake shoe guide plate and the parking brake shoe guide plate set bolt.

      Torque:
      18 N*m  { 184 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf }
  9. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER


    1. Apply high temperature grease to the parking brake shoe lever which makes contact with the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly.

      Install the parking brake shoe lever and shim to the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly with a new C-washer.

    3. A01ELF2

      Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly and parking brake shoe lever.

      Standard clearance
      Less than 0.35 mm (0.0138 in.)

      If the clearance is not as specified, replace the shim with one of the appropriate size.

  10. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY WITH PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER

      Using needle-nose pliers, connect the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly to the parking brake shoe lever as shown in the illustration.

  11. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN TENSION SPRING

      Install the No. 2 parking brake shoe return tension spring to the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly.

  12. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY

      Connect the No. 2 parking brake shoe return tension spring to install the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly.

  13. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET

      Apply high temperature grease to the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set as shown in the illustration.

      Install the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set.

  14. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY

      Install the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly to the backing plate with the No. 1 parking brake shoe hold down spring cup, parking brake shoe hold down spring and No. 2 parking brake shoe hold down spring cup.

  15. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT


    1. A01EM0F

      Install the parking brake shoe strut and the parking brake shoe strut compression spring.

  16. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY


    1. A01ELNW

      Install the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly to the backing plate with the No. 1 parking brake shoe hold down spring cup, parking brake shoe hold down spring and No. 2 parking brake shoe hold down spring cup.

  17. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN TENSION SPRING

      Install the 2 No. 1 parking brake shoe return tension springs.

      Tech Tips

      First install the front side spring and then the rear side spring.

  18. CHECK PARKING BRAKE INSTALLATION


    1. Check that each part is installed properly.

      Note

      There should be no oil or grease on the friction surfaces of the shoe lining and disc.

  19. INSTALL REAR DISC

      Align the matchmarks of the rear disc and axle hub, and install the rear disc.

      Note

      When installing a new rear disc, select the installation position where the rear disc has minimal runout.

  20. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY

      Install the rear disc brake caliper assembly with the 2 bolts.

      Torque:
      78 N*m  { 800 kgf*cm, 58 ft.*lbf }
  21. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT (for AWD)

    Note

    Perform this procedure only when the No. 1 parking brake shoe hold down spring pin is replaced.

  22. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE


    1. Completely release the parking brake pedal.

      *1 No. 1 wire adjusting nut
      *2 Lock nut

      Loosen the lock nut and No. 1 wire adjusting nut to completely release the parking brake cable.

    3. Remove the rear wheel.

    4. Temporarily install the 5 hub nuts.

    5. Remove the shoe adjusting hole plug.

      Turn the shoe adjuster and expand the shoe until the disc locks.

    7. Turn and contract the shoe adjuster until the disc can rotate smoothly.

      Standard
      Returns 8 notches.
    8. Check that there is no brake drag against the shoe.

    9. Install the shoe adjusting hole plug.

    10. Turn the adjusting nut until the parking brake pedal travel is corrected to be within the specified range.

      Parking brake pedal travel
      4 to 6 notches at 300 N (31 kgf, 67.5 lbf)
    11. Using a wrench or an equivalent tool, hold the adjusting nut and tighten the lock nut.

      Torque:
      5.4 N*m  { 55 kgf*cm, 48 in.*lbf }
    12. Operate the parking brake pedal 3 to 4 times, and check the parking brake pedal travel.

    13. Check that there is no brake drag against the shoe.

    14. Remove the 5 hub nuts.

    15. Install the rear wheel.

      Torque:
      103 N*m  { 1050 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf }
  23. INSTALL REAR WHEEL

    Torque:
    103 N*m  { 1050 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf }
  24. BED IN PARKING BRAKE SHOES TO DISCS


    1. Drive the vehicle at about 50 km/h (31 mph) on a safe, level and dry road.

    2. Depress the parking brake pedal with 150 N (15 kgf, 33.7 lbf) of force.

    3. Drive the vehicle for about 400 m (0.25 mile) in this condition.

    4. Repeat this procedure 3 times.

      Note

      Set a 5-minute interval between each procedure to prevent the brake assembly from overheating.

  25. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE AND PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL


    1. Completely release the parking brake pedal.

      Loosen the lock nut and No. 1 wire adjusting nut to completely release the parking brake cable.

    3. Remove the rear wheel.
