FRONT LOWER BALL JOINT REMOVAL

Tech Tips

  • Use the same procedure for the LH side and RH side.

  • The following procedure listed is for the LH side.

  1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL

  2. REMOVE FRONT AXLE SHAFT NUT

    1. A01EJ3RE01

Using SST and a hammer, release the staked part of the front axle shaft nut.

      *1 Hole
      *2 Resin Clamp

Remove the bolt and resin clamp, and separate the front speed sensor.

      Note

      • Be sure to completely separate the front speed sensor from the front shock absorber with coil spring.

      • Be careful not to damage the front speed sensor.

      • Clean the speed sensor installation hole and the surfaces every time the speed sensor is removed.

  4. SEPARATE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

      *1 Matchmark

Put matchmarks on the front drive shaft assembly and front axle hub sub-assembly.

    2. A01ELLE

Using a plastic hammer, separate the front drive shaft assembly from the front axle assembly.

      Note

Loosen the staked part of the front axle hub nut completely, otherwise the threads of the drive shaft may be damaged.

  5. SEPARATE FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY

    1. A01EJQ1

Remove the 2 bolts and separate the front disc brake caliper assembly.

      Note

Use wire or an equivalent tool to keep the brake caliper from hanging down by the flexible hose.

  6. REMOVE FRONT DISC

Put matchmarks on the front disc and front axle hub.

      Tech Tips

The above step is not necessary when the front disc will be replaced.

    2. Remove the front disc.

  7. SEPARATE TIE ROD ASSEMBLY

    1. A01EKQ5

Remove the cotter pin and nut.

    2. A01EK74E01

Install SST to the tie rod end.

      CAUTION:

Apply grease to the threads and end of the SST bolt.

      Note

      • When securing SST to the steering knuckle, be sure to tighten the string of SST to prevent it from falling.

      • Install SST so that A and B are parallel.

      • Be sure to place a wrench on the part indicated in the illustration.

      • Do not damage the front disc brake dust cover.

      • Do not damage the ball joint dust cover.

      • Do not damage the steering knuckle.

  8. SEPARATE FRONT LOWER SUSPENSION ARM

    1. A01EMOH

Remove the bolt, 2 nuts, and separate the front lower suspension arm from the lower ball joint.

  9. REMOVE FRONT AXLE ASSEMBLY

    1. A01EK1B

Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and front axle assembly.

      Note

When removing the nuts, keep the bolts from rotating.

  10. REMOVE FRONT LOWER BALL JOINT

    1. A01EMR5

Secure the front axle assembly in a vise using aluminum plates.

      Note

When using a vise, do not overtighten it.

    2. A01EM4K

Remove the cotter pin and nut.

    3. A01EMPZE03

Install SST to the front lower ball joint as shown in the illustration.

      SST
