RECOVER REFRIGERANT FROM REFRIGERATION SYSTEM
Start up the engine.
Turn the A/C switch on.
Operate the cooler compressor at an engine speed of approximately 1000 rpm for 5 to 6 minutes to circulate the refrigerant. This causes most of the compressor oil from the various components of the A/C system to collect in the A/C compressor.
Stop the engine.
Recover the refrigerant from the A/C system using a refrigerant recovery unit.

REMOVE COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL
Remove the 12 clips and cool air intake duct seal.
REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER
REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER
SEPARATE FRONT FENDER LINER LH
SEPARATE FRONT FENDER LINER RH
REMOVE FRONT FENDER APRON SEAL LH
Remove the 2 bolts, clip and front fender apron seal LH.
REMOVE FRONT FENDER APRON SEAL RH
Remove the 2 bolts, clip and front fender apron seal RH.
DRAIN ENGINE OIL
Remove the oil filler cap.
Remove the oil pan drain plug and gasket, and drain the engine oil into a container.
Install a new gasket to the oil pan drain plug.
Clean and install the oil pan drain plug.
DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT
Loosen the radiator drain cock plug and drain the coolant.
Note
Do not remove the reserve tank cap or radiator drain cock plug while the engine and radiator are still hot. Pressurized, hot engine coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns.
Tech Tips
Collect the coolant in a container and dispose of it according to the regulations in your area.
Remove the radiator cap sub-assembly from the radiator assembly.

Remove the transfer drain plug and gasket to drain the transfer oil.
Install a new gasket and the transfer drain plug.
REMOVE FRONT WIPER ARM HEAD CAP

REMOVE FRONT WIPER ARM AND BLADE ASSEMBLY LH
Remove the nut and the front wiper arm and blade assembly LH.

Remove the nut and the front wiper arm and blade assembly RH.
REMOVE FRONT FENDER TO COWL SIDE SEAL LH
Disengage the claw and 2 guides and remove the front fender to cowl side seal LH.

Use the same procedure for the RH side and LH side.
REMOVE COWL TOP VENTILATOR LOUVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
Using a clip remover, remove the 2 clips.
Disengage the 13 claws and pull out the cowl top ventilator louver sub-assembly as shown in the illustration.
REMOVE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR AND LINK ASSEMBLY
Disconnect the connector.
Remove the 3 bolts and the windshield wiper motor and link assembly as shown in the illustration.
REMOVE OUTER COWL TOP PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
Disengage the 2 clamps and separate the wiper wire harness from the outer cowl top panel sub-assembly.
Disengage the 2 clamps and connector, and separate the wire harness from the outer cowl top panel sub-assembly (w/ Windshield Deicer).

Remove the 4 bolts, 4 nuts and outer cowl top panel sub-assembly.
REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
Lift the rear of the No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly to detach the cover from the 2 pins, and then lift the front of the No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly to detach the cover from the pin and remove the No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly.
Note
Attempting to disengage both front and rear clips at the same time may cause the No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly to break.
REMOVE BATTERY
Remove the nut and separate the positive (+) battery terminal.
Loosen the nut and remove the bolt and battery clamp.
Remove the battery and battery tray.
REMOVE INLET AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY
Remove the 2 bolts and inlet air cleaner assembly.
REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP SUB-ASSEMBLY
Disconnect the mass air flow meter connector and separate the wire harness clamp from the air cleaner cap.
Separate the hose from the hose clamp.
Disconnect the ventilation hose from the cylinder head cover.
Unlock the hose band and separate the air cleaner cap sub-assembly from the throttle body assembly.
Remove the 2 bolts and air cleaner cap sub-assembly.
REMOVE AIR CLEANER FILTER ELEMENT SUB-ASSEMBLY
Remove the air cleaner filter element sub-assembly.
REMOVE AIR CLEANER CASE SUB-ASSEMBLY
Disconnect the wire harness clamp.
Remove the 3 bolts and air cleaner case sub-assembly.
REMOVE AIR CLEANER BRACKET
Remove the 2 bolts and air cleaner bracket.
DISCONNECT NO. 1 RADIATOR HOSE
Disconnect the wire harness clamp.
Disconnect the No. 1 radiator hose.
DISCONNECT NO. 2 RADIATOR HOSE
Disconnect the No. 2 radiator hose.
DISCONNECT INLET HEATER WATER HOSE
Disconnect inlet heater water hose.
DISCONNECT OUTLET HEATER WATER HOSE
Disconnect outlet heater water hose.
DISCONNECT FUEL TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY
Remove the No. 1 fuel pipe clamp.
Pinch the fuel tube connector and then pull out the fuel main tube.
Note
Check for dirt and foreign objects on the pipe and around the connector. Clean if necessary and then disconnect the connector.
Disconnect the connector by hand.
Do not bend, fold or rotate the nylon tube.
If the pipe and connector are stuck together, push and pull the connector until it becomes free.
Put the pipe and connector ends in plastic bags to prevent damage and contamination.
DISCONNECT INLET NO. 1 OIL COOLER HOSE
Disconnect the inlet No. 1 oil cooler hose.
DISCONNECT OUTLET NO. 1 OIL COOLER HOSE
Disconnect the outlet No. 1 oil cooler hose.
DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY
Remove the clip and nut, and disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the transaxle.
DISCONNECT ENGINE WIRE
Remove the No. 1 relay block cover.
Disconnect the 2 connectors.
Remove the nut.
Using a screwdriver, unlock the claw and separate the engine wire from the engine room relay block.
Disconnect the 2 engine wire clamps.
Remove the bolt and separate the ground cables.
Disconnect the ground cable clamp.
Remove the 2 bolts and separate the ground cable.
Remove the bolt and separate the ground cable.
Disconnect the 2 clamps, remove the nut and separate the positive (+) cable.
Pull up the lever to disconnect the ECM connector.
Disconnect the 2 clamps.
REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE MOUNTING STAY RH
Remove the 2 bolts and No. 2 engine mounting stay RH.
REMOVE ENGINE MOVING CONTROL ROD
Remove the 4 bolts and engine moving control rod.
DISCONNECT UNION TO CHECK VALVE HOSE
Disconnect the 2 union to check valve hoses.
DISCONNECT SUCTION HOSE SUB-ASSEMBLY
Remove the bolt and disconnect the suction hose sub-assembly from the compressor assembly with pulley.
Remove the O-ring from the suction hose sub-assembly.
Note
Seal the openings of the disconnected parts using vinyl tape to prevent entry of moisture and foreign matter.
DISCONNECT COOLER REFRIGERANT DISCHARGE HOSE
Disengage each clamp.
Disconnect each connector.
Using pliers, grip the claws of the clip and slide the clip to remove the No. 2 radiator hose.
Remove the bolt and disconnect the cooler refrigerant discharge hose from the compressor assembly with pulley.
Remove the O-ring from the discharge hose.
Note
Seal the openings of the disconnected parts using vinyl tape to prevent entry of moisture and foreign matter.
REMOVE TAIL EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY (for AWD)
Remove the 2 bolts and 2 compression springs.
Remove the tail exhaust pipe assembly from the 4 exhaust pipe supports.
Remove the gasket from the center exhaust pipe assembly.
REMOVE CENTER EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY (for AWD)
Remove the 2 bolts.
Remove the center exhaust pipe assembly from the 2 exhaust pipe supports.
Remove the gasket from the center exhaust pipe assembly.
REMOVE PROPELLER WITH CENTER BEARING SHAFT ASSEMBLY (for AWD)
Depress the brake pedal and hold it.

Using a hexagon wrench (6 mm), loosen the cross groove joint set bolts 1/2 turn.
Note
Put a piece of cloth or equivalent into the inside of the universal joint cover so that the boot does not touch the inside of the universal joint cover.
Do not remove the bolts.

Place matchmarks on the rear propeller shaft and electromagnetic control coupling assembly.
Remove the 4 nuts and 4 washers.
Using a brass bar and a hammer, separate the propeller with center bearing shaft assembly.
Remove the 4 bolts, 2 No. 1 center support bearing washers and 2 No. 2 center support bearing washers.
Note
When removing the bolts and washers, do not apply excessive force to the universal joint.
Pull out the propeller with center bearing shaft assembly from the transfer.
Note
When removing the propeller shaft, do not apply excessive force to the universal joint.
During and after the removal of the propeller shaft, keep the universal joint angle straight (within 15 degrees).
Be careful not to damage the oil seal.
Insert SST into the transfer to prevent oil leaks.

Be careful not to damage the oil seal.
REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY
Remove the 2 bolts, 2 compression springs and front exhaust pipe assembly.
Remove the gasket from the exhaust manifold converter sub-assembly.
SECURE STEERING WHEEL
Secure the steering wheel with the seat belt in order to prevent it from rotating.
Tech Tips
This operation is necessary to prevent damage to the spiral cable.
DISCONNECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY

Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly and steering link assembly.
Remove the bolt and slide the steering intermediate shaft assembly.
Separate the steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering link assembly.
REMOVE FRONT AXLE SHAFT NUT LH
Using SST and a hammer, release the staked part of the front axle shaft nut.
Note
Loosen the staked part of the nut completely, otherwise the threads of the drive shaft may be damaged.
While applying the brakes, remove the front axle shaft nut.
REMOVE FRONT AXLE SHAFT NUT RH

Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.
SEPARATE FRONT SPEED SENSOR LH
Remove the bolt and separate the front speed sensor from the steering knuckle.
Remove the bolt and clamp, and separate the front speed sensor and front flexible hose.
SEPARATE FRONT SPEED SENSOR RH
Tech Tips
Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.
SEPARATE TIE ROD ASSEMBLY LH
Remove the cotter pin and nut.
Install SST to the tie rod end.
Note
Make sure that the upper ends of the tie rod end and SST are aligned.
Using SST, separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.

CAUTION:
Apply grease to the threads and end of the SST bolt.
Note
When securing SST to the steering knuckle, be sure to tighten the string of SST to prevent it from falling.
Install SST so that A and B are parallel.
Be sure to place a wrench on the part indicated in the illustration.
Do not damage the front disc brake dust cover.
Do not damage the ball joint dust cover.
Do not damage the steering knuckle.
SEPARATE TIE ROD ASSEMBLY RH

Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.
SEPARATE FRONT STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY LH
Remove the nut and separate the front stabilizer link assembly from the front shock absorber.
Tech Tips
If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a hexagon wrench (6 mm) to hold the stud bolt.
SEPARATE FRONT STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY RH

Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.
SEPARATE FRONT LOWER SUSPENSION ARM LH
Remove the bolt and 2 nuts, and separate the front lower suspension arm from the front lower ball joint.

Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.
SEPARATE FRONT AXLE ASSEMBLY LH
Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and front axle assembly.
Note
When removing the nuts, keep the bolts from rotating.
Be careful not to damage the drive shaft boot and speed sensor rotor.

REMOVE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY LH
Using SST, remove the front drive shaft assembly LH.
Note
Be careful not to damage the drive shaft dust cover, boot or oil seal.

REMOVE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT HOLE SNAP RING (for LH Side)
Using a screwdriver, remove the front drive shaft hole snap ring.
REMOVE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY RH (for 2WD)
Remove the bearing bracket hole snap ring from the drive shaft bearing bracket.
Remove the bolt and front drive shaft assembly RH from the drive shaft bearing bracket.
Note
Do not damage the boot or oil seal.
REMOVE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY RH (for AWD)
Remove the bearing bracket hole snap ring from the drive shaft bearing bracket.
Remove the bolt and front drive shaft assembly RH from the drive shaft bearing bracket.
Note
Do not damage the boot or oil seal.
REMOVE FRONT FLOOR BRACE
Remove the 4 nuts and front floor brace.
REMOVE FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER
Remove the flywheel housing under cover.
REMOVE DRIVE PLATE AND TORQUE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY SETTING BOLT
Using SST, hold the crankshaft pulley.

Remove the 6 drive plate and torque converter assembly setting bolts.

There will be one black colored bolt.
REMOVE ENGINE ASSEMBLY WITH TRANSAXLE
Prepare an engine lifter.
Remove the 4 bolts, 2 nuts, and frame side rail plates RH and LH.
Remove the 4 bolts, 2 nuts, and front suspension member rear braces RH and LH.
Operate the engine lifter, then remove the engine assembly with transaxle from the vehicle.
Note
Make sure that the engine is clear of all wiring and hoses.
REMOVE NO. 1 FRONT STABILIZER BRACKET LH (for AWD)
Remove the 2 bolts and front No. 1 stabilizer bracket LH from the front frame assembly.
REMOVE NO. 1 FRONT STABILIZER BRACKET RH (for AWD)
Tech Tips
Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.
REMOVE FRONT STABILIZER BAR (for AWD)
Remove the front stabilizer bar.
REMOVE STEERING LINK ASSEMBLY (for AWD)
Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and steering link assembly.
Note
Because the nut has its own stopper, do not turn the nut. Loosen the bolt with the nut secured.
INSTALL ENGINE HANGERS

Tech Tips
Fit the fork part of the No. 2 engine hanger onto the rib of the cylinder head.
Attach the engine sling device and hang the engine with the chain block.
REMOVE V-RIBBED BELT
Attach a wrench to the hexagonal portion of the belt tensioner as shown in the illustration, rotate the belt tensioner clockwise, and remove the V-ribbed belt.
REMOVE GENERATOR ASSEMBLY
Disconnect the generator connector.
Remove the terminal cap.
Remove the nut and disconnect the generator wire.
Remove the bolt and wire harness clamp bracket.
Remove the 2 bolts and generator.
REMOVE COMPRESSOR ASSEMBLY WITH PULLEY
Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and compressor assembly with pulley.
Using an E8 "TORX" socket wrench, remove the 2 stud bolts.
REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY
Disconnect the starter connector.
Open the terminal cap, remove the nut and disconnect the starter wire.
Remove the 2 bolts and starter.
SEPARATE REAR ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR ASSEMBLY (for AWD)
Remove the 2 bolts and separate the rear engine mounting insulator assembly from the rear engine mounting bracket.
REMOVE FRONT FRAME ASSEMBLY
Disconnect the 2 clamps with the engine wire.
Remove the 2 nuts and separate the engine mounting insulators RH and LH.
Remove the bolt and separate the front engine mounting insulator.
Remove the front frame assembly from the engine assembly with transaxle.
REMOVE FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR ASSEMBLY
Remove the 2 hole plugs.
Remove the 3 nuts and front engine mounting insulator assembly.
Tech Tips
Perform this procedure only when replacement of the engine mounting insulator is necessary.
REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR LH
Remove the 2 hole plugs.
Remove the 3 nuts and engine mounting insulator LH.

Remove the 8 bolts, front drive plate spacer, drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly, and rear drive plate spacer.
REMOVE ENGINE WIRE
Remove the engine wire.
INSTALL ENGINE ON ENGINE STAND
Install the engine onto an engine stand with the bolts.
REMOVE ENGINE HANGERS
