METER / GAUGE SYSTEM Engine Coolant Temperature Receiver Gauge Malfunction

DESCRIPTION

In this circuit, the No. 1 meter ECU receives engine coolant temperature signals from the hybrid vehicle control ECU using the CAN communication system. The No. 1 meter ECU displays engine coolant temperature that is calculated based on the data received from the hybrid vehicle control ECU.

Tech Tips

  • If there is an open or short in the engine coolant temperature sensor circuit, the ECM stores the DTCs. Troubleshoot the SFI System Click here.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

    1. Check for DTC Click here [for LHD], Click here [for RHD]).

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (WATER TEMPERATURE METER OPERATION)

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).

    3. Turn the intelligent tester on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Active Test.

    5. Check the operation by referring to the table below.

      Combination Meter
Tester Display Test Part Control Range
Water Temperature Meter Operation Engine coolant temperature receiver gauge LOW, NORMAL or HIGH
      OK
Engine coolant temperature receiver gauge indication is normal.

    OK
  3. READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (COOLANT TEMPERATURE)

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).

    3. Turn the intelligent tester on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Data List.

    5. Check the values by referring to the table below.

      Combination Meter
Tester Display Measurement Item/Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
      Coolant Temperature Engine coolant temperature/Min.: -40 (-40), Max.: 140 (284) After warming up: 80 to 105 (176 to 221)
      • Unit: °C (°F)

      • If value -40 (-40): Sensor circuit open

      • If value 140 (284): Sensor circuit shorted

      OK
Engine coolant temperature value displayed on the intelligent tester is almost the same as the engine coolant temperature receiver gauge indication.
    6. Record the temperature displayed on the intelligent tester.

    OK
  4. READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (ENGINE COOLANT TEMP)

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).

    3. Turn the intelligent tester on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Hybrid Control / Data List.

    5. Check the values by referring to the table below.

      Hybrid Control
Tester Display Measurement Item/Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
Engine Coolant Temp Engine coolant temperature/-40 to 140°C (-40 to 284°F) After warming up: 80 to 100°C (176 to 212°F)
      • If value -40°C (-40°F): sensor circuit open

      • If value 140°C (284°F) or more: sensor circuit shorted

      OK
Engine coolant temperature value displayed on the intelligent tester is almost the same as the previously recorded intelligent tester indication (Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Data List / Coolant Temperature).
