VARIABLE GEAR RATIO STEERING SYSTEM, Diagnostic DTC:C15A1/61

DTC Code DTC Name
C15A1/61 Actuator Malfunction

DESCRIPTION

The steering control ECU drives the actuator while the steering wheel is turned to set the gear ratio. It detects the current flowing into the actuator motor driving circuit.

If the steering control ECU detects excessive current, it will store DTC C15A1/61, turn on the master warning light, and stop VGRS operation.

DTC Code Detection Condition Trouble Area
C15A1/61 Excessive current (exceeding the estimated amount) flows due to a malfunction in the motor drive circuit.
  • Harness or connector

  • Steering actuator

  • Steering control ECU

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

Tech Tips

When DTC C15A2/62 is output, a short circuit inside the steering actuator or inside the steering control ECU is suspected.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (STEERING CONTROL ECU - STEERING ACTUATOR)

    A01H1HYE03

    1. Disconnect the A43 steering control ECU connector.

    2. Disconnect the z15 steering actuator connector.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
A43-1 (BMV) - A43-2 (BMU) Always 10 kΩ or higher
      A43-1 (BMV) - A43-3 (BMW)
      A43-2 (BMU) - A43-3 (BMW)
      A43-1 (BMV) - z15-2 (V) Always Below 1 Ω
      A43-2 (BMU) - z15-3 (U)
      A43-3 (BMW) - z15-1 (W)
A43-1 (BMV) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      A43-2 (BMU) - Body ground
      A42-3 (BMW) - Body ground

    NG
    OK
  2. CHECK STEERING ACTUATOR

    1. A01H0V0E01

Disconnect the A43 steering control ECU connector.

      Tech Tips

The resistance must be measured after the steering actuator connector is connected.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A43-1 (BMV) - A43-2 (BMU) Always Below 1 Ω
      A43-1 (BMV) - A43-3 (BMW)
      A43-2 (BMU) - A43-3 (BMW)
A43-1 (BMV) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      A43-2 (BMU) - Body ground
      A43-3 (BMW) - Body ground

    NG
    OK
