SFI SYSTEM, Diagnostic DTC:P0010

DTC Code DTC Name
P0010 Camshaft Position "A" Actuator Circuit (Bank 1)

DESCRIPTION

Tech Tips

This DTC relates to the oil control valve.

The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system includes the ECM, intake camshaft timing oil control valve assembly and VVT controller. The ECM sends a target duty cycle control signal to the intake camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. This control signal regulates the oil pressure applied to the VVT controller. Camshaft timing control is performed according to engine operating conditions such as the intake air volume, throttle valve position and engine coolant temperature. The ECM controls the intake camshaft timing oil control valve assembly based on the signals transmitted by several sensors. The VVT controller regulates the intake camshaft angle using oil pressure through the intake camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. As a result, the relative positions of the camshaft and crankshaft are optimized, the engine torque and fuel economy improve, and the exhaust emissions decrease under overall driving conditions. The ECM detects the actual intake valve timing using signals from the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors and performs feedback control. This is how the target intake valve timing is verified by the ECM.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

Tech Tips

Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (OPERATE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE)

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Start the engine.

    3. Turn the tester on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1).

    5. Check the engine speed when the camshaft timing oil control valve is operated using the intelligent tester when the engine coolant temperature is 50°C (122°F) or less.

      Tech Tips

      • When performing the Active Test, make sure the air conditioning is on.

      • Make sure the engine coolant temperature when the engine is started is 30°C (86°F) or less.

      OK
      Tester Operation Specified Condition
Camshaft timing oil control valve OFF Normal engine speed
Camshaft timing oil control valve ON Engine idles roughly or stalls soon after camshaft timing oil control valve switched from OFF to ON

    NG
    OK
  2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY

    1. Inspect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly Click here.

    2. A01DRGSE07

Connect the positive (+) battery terminal to terminal 1 and the negative (-) battery terminal to terminal 2. Check the valve operation.

      OK
      Valve moves quickly.
    3. Reinstall the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly.

    NG
    OK
  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY - ECM)

    1. Disconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly connector.

    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance (Check for Open)
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      C54-2 (+) - C62-14 (OC1+) Always Below 1 Ω
      C54-1 (-) - C62-9 (OC1-) Always Below 1 Ω
      Standard Resistance (Check for Short)
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      C54-2 (+) or C62-14 (OC1+) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      C54-1 (-) or C62-9 (OC1-) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Reconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly connector.

    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    NG
    OK
