FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER (w/ Air Suspension) INSTALLATION

Tech Tips


  • Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side.

  • The procedures listed below are for the LH side.

  • A bolt without a torque specification is shown in the standard bolt chart Click here.


  1. INSTALL FRONT PNEUMATIC CYLINDER LH O-RING

    Tech Tips

    It is unnecessary to perform the following procedures if the pneumatic cylinder with front shock absorber has been replaced with a new one.


    1. Lightly coat 2 new O-rings with MP grease.

    2. A01GLEAE01

      Install the 2 new O-rings and a new plate to a straight tube or equivalent, as shown in the illustration.

    3. A01GKNT

      Insert the tube end with the 2 O-rings and plate into the pneumatic cylinder with front shock absorber LH. Then, lightly push in the O-rings and plate with a thick piece of paper.

    4. While holding the O-rings and plate in place with the paper, slowly pull out the tube.

    5. A01GHOQE01

      Install a new tube connector.

      Note

      Push in the tube connector until a "click" sound is heard.

  2. INSTALL PNEUMATIC CYLINDER WITH FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY LH (for 2WD)


    1. A01GNO4

      Install the pneumatic cylinder with front shock absorber assembly LH on the vehicle by installing the 3 nuts on the suspension support side.

      Torque:
      67 N*m  { 683 kgf*cm, 49 ft.*lbf }
  3. INSTALL LOWER FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER BRACKET SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (for AWD)


    1. A01GJU9

      Install the lower front shock absorber bracket sub-assembly LH to the pneumatic cylinder with front shock absorber assembly LH with the bolt.

      Torque:
      48 N*m  { 489 kgf*cm, 35 ft.*lbf }
  4. INSTALL PNEUMATIC CYLINDER WITH FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY LH (for AWD)

    Note

    When installing a new pneumatic cylinder with front shock absorber assembly LH:

    Do not remove the attachment until the height control tube is installed.


    1. A01GHJQE01

      When reusing the pneumatic cylinder with front shock absorber assembly LH:

      Align the matchmarks on the front suspension support assembly and pneumatic cylinder chamber.

    2. A01GNO4

      Install the pneumatic cylinder with front shock absorber assembly LH on the vehicle by installing the 3 nuts on the suspension support side.

      Torque:
      67 N*m  { 683 kgf*cm, 49 ft.*lbf }
  5. INSTALL ABSORBER CONTROL ACTUATOR


    1. A01GLMGE01

      Check that the control rod of the pneumatic cylinder with front shock absorber assembly LH is in the position shown in the illustration.

      Note

      If the control rod is not in the position shown in the illustration, turn the control rod to adjust the position and install the absorber control actuator.

    2. A01GIKJ

      Install the absorber control actuator to the actuator support bracket. Turn the actuator clockwise approximately 40° until a click is felt.

      Note

      Do not excessively turn the actuator.

  6. INSTALL FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER CAP LH (for 2WD)


    1. Connect the connector to the shock absorber control actuator.

    2. A01GMKA

      Install the shock absorber cap with the 3 nuts.

      Torque:
      20 N*m  { 204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf }
  7. INSTALL FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER CAP LH (for AWD)


    1. Connect the connector to the shock absorber control actuator.

    2. A01GHTF

      Install the shock absorber cap with the 3 nuts.

      Torque:
      20 N*m  { 204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf }
  8. INSTALL ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER LH (for 2WD)


    1. Install the engine room side cover LH with the 5 clips.

  9. INSTALL ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER LH (for AWD)


    1. Install the engine room side cover LH with the 5 clips.

  10. INSTALL AIR CLEANER INLET COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)


    1. Install the 4 clips and air cleaner inlet cover.

  11. INSTALL AIR CLEANER INLET COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY (for AWD)


    1. A01GLYAE01

      Attach the 4 clips labeled B.

      Note


      • Make sure the clips are attached securely.

      • Attaching the clips forcefully or hitting the top of the clips may damage them.

    2. Install the air cleaner inlet cover sub-assembly with the 5 clips labeled A.

  12. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN FRONT NO. 2 SUSPENSION LOWER ARM ASSEMBLY LH (for 2WD)


    1. A01GMFE

      Temporarily install the front No. 2 suspension lower arm with the nut.

      Tech Tips

      Tighten the nut after the vehicle is stabilized.

    2. A01GKV4E01

      Temporarily install the front No. 2 suspension lower arm LH to the steering knuckle with the nut.

      Tech Tips

      Tighten the nut after the vehicle is stabilized.

    3. A01GM42

      Install the bottom side of the pneumatic cylinder with front shock absorber assembly LH to the No. 2 suspension lower arm LH. Then insert the bolt from the rear of the vehicle and temporarily install it with the nut.

      Tech Tips

      Tighten the nut after the vehicle is stabilized.

  13. TEMPORARILY INSTALL LOWER FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER BRACKET SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (for AWD)


    1. Install the lower front shock absorber bracket sub-assembly LH to the front No. 1 suspension lower arm LH.

    2. A01GJTE

      Align the protrusion of the front shock absorber upper bracket plate with cutout of the lower front shock absorber bracket sub-assembly LH, and temporarily install the nut.

    3. A01GM9Y

      Install the skid control sensor wire to the pneumatic cylinder with front shock absorber assembly LH with the bolt.

      Note


      • Do not twist the skid control sensor wire.

      • When installing the bolt, do not deform the pneumatic cylinder with front shock absorber assembly LH.

  14. CONNECT NO. 4 HEIGHT CONTROL TUBE


    1. A01GMEBE01

      When installing a new pneumatic cylinder with front shock absorber assembly LH:

      Remove the attachment.

    2. Connect the No. 4 height control tube to the cylinder.

    3. Connect the No. 1 tube connector.

  15. INSTALL AIR CONNECTOR CLIP HOLDER


    1. A01GLJNE01

      Install the air connector clip holder to the No. 1 tube connector.

  16. INSTALL FRONT STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY LH (for 2WD)


    1. A01GJW2

      Install the front stabilizer link with the 2 nuts.

      Torque:
      84 N*m  { 857 kgf*cm, 62 ft.*lbf }

      Tech Tips

      If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a 6 mm hexagon wrench to hold the stud.

  17. INSTALL FRONT STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY LH (for AWD)

    A01GHJW

    1. Install the front stabilizer link with the 2 nuts.

      Torque:
      85 N*m  { 867 kgf*cm, 63 ft.*lbf }

      Tech Tips

      If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a 6 mm hexagon wrench to hold the stud bolt.

  18. CONNECT FRONT HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (for 2WD)


    1. A01GILO

      Install the bracket of the front height control sensor LH to the front No. 2 suspension lower arm LH with the bolt.

      Torque:
      5.4 N*m  { 55 kgf*cm, 48 in.*lbf }
  19. CONNECT FRONT HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (for AWD)


    1. A01GJ81

      Install the bracket of the front height control sensor LH to the front No. 1 suspension lower arm LH with the bolt.

      Torque:
      5.4 N*m  { 55 kgf*cm, 48 ft.*lbf }
  20. CONNECT FRONT NO. 1 SUSPENSION LOWER ARM ASSEMBLY LH (for 2WD)


    1. A01GHYM

      Connect the No. 1 suspension lower arm to the steering knuckle with the nut.

      Torque:
      145 N*m  { 1479 kgf*cm, 107 ft.*lbf }
    2. Install a new clip.

      Note

      If it is necessary to align the holes for the clip after installing the nut, the nut can be tightened up to 60° more.

  21. INSTALL STEERING KNUCKLE SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (for AWD)


    1. Connect the splines of the steering knuckle LH and drive shaft assembly.

    2. A01GKHY

      Install the steering knuckle to the front lower ball joint with the 3 bolts.

      Torque:
      113 N*m  { 1149 kgf*cm, 83 ft.*lbf }
  22. CONNECT FRONT NO. 1 SUSPENSION UPPER ARM ASSEMBLY LH (for AWD)


    1. A01GN6N

      Install the steering knuckle to the front No. 1 suspension upper arm with the nut.

      Torque:
      60 N*m  { 612 kgf*cm, 44 ft.*lbf }
    2. Install new clips.

      Note

      If it is necessary to align the holes for the clips after installing the nuts, the nuts can be tightened up to 60° more.

  23. CONNECT FRONT NO. 2 SUSPENSION UPPER ARM ASSEMBLY LH (for AWD)


    1. A01GJ3P

      Install the steering knuckle to the front No. 2 suspension upper arm with the nut.

      Torque:
      60 N*m  { 612 kgf*cm, 44 ft.*lbf }
    2. Install new clips.

      Note

      If it is necessary to align the holes for the clips after installing the nuts, the nuts can be tightened up to 60° more.

  24. CONNECT TIE ROD ASSEMBLY LH


    1. A01GN22

      Connect the tie rod to the steering knuckle with the nut.

      Torque:
      60 N*m  { 612 kgf*cm, 44 ft.*lbf }
    2. Install new clips.

      Note

      If it is necessary to align the holes for the clips after installing the nuts, the nuts can be tightened up to 60° more.

  25. INSTALL FRONT SPEED SENSOR LH (for AWD)


    1. A01GK3A

      Install the speed sensor to the steering knuckle with the bolt.

      Torque:
      8.5 N*m  { 87 kgf*cm, 75 in.*lbf }

      Note


      • Do not damage the tip of the speed sensor.

      • Do not allow foreign matter to contact the tip or installation area of the speed sensor.

  26. CONNECT SKID CONTROL SENSOR WIRE (for AWD)


    1. A01GHOM

      Connect the front speed sensor connector.

    2. Install the sensor clamp to the steering knuckle LH with the bolt.

      Torque:
      8.5 N*m  { 87 kgf*cm, 75 in.*lbf }

      Note

      Do not twist the skid control sensor wire.

  27. INSTALL FRONT DISC BRAKE DUST COVER LH


    1. A01GIF5

      Install the front disc brake dust cover with the 4 bolts.

      Torque:
      8.0 N*m  { 82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf }
  28. INSTALL FRONT DISC

    Note

    The 18 inch disc has an identification mark. Make sure of the identification mark when installing the disc.

    Tech Tips

    The 17 inch disc has no identification mark. The disc can be installed to the LH or RH side.

      Align the matchmarks, and install the front disc.

      Tech Tips

      When replacing the front disc with a new one, select the installation position where the front disc has the minimum runout.

  29. CONNECT FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY LH


    1. A01GK2W

      Install the front disc brake caliper to the steering knuckle with 2 new bolts.

      Torque:
      135 N*m  { 1377 kgf*cm, 100 ft.*lbf }

      Note


      • Do not twist the flexible hose.

      • Make sure the threaded parts are free from foreign matter and are not damaged.

      • Be careful not to overtighten the bolts, as the steering knuckle is made of aluminum.

    2. A01GL7B

      Connect the flexible hose to the steering knuckle with the bolt.

      Torque:
      20 N*m  { 204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf }
  30. CONNECT SPEED SENSOR CONNECTOR (for 2WD)


    1. Connect the speed sensor connector to the speed sensor.

      Note


      • Do not damage the tip of the speed sensor.

      • Do not allow foreign matter to contact the tip or installation area of the speed sensor.

      • Do not twist the speed sensor wire.

    2. A01GK0K

      Install the speed sensor wire to the front No. 1 suspension lower arm with the 2 bolts.

      Torque:
      8.5 N*m  { 87 kgf*cm, 75 in.*lbf }
  31. INSTALL FRONT AXLE SHAFT NUT LH (for AWD)


    1. Clean the threaded parts on the drive shaft and axle shaft nut using a non-residue solvent.

      Note


      • Be sure to perform this work for a new drive shaft.

      • Keep the threaded parts free of oil and foreign objects.

    2. Using a 30 mm socket wrench, install a new axle shaft nut.

      Torque:
      294 N*m  { 2998 kgf*cm, 217 ft.*lbf }

      Note

      Do not stake the shaft nut.

      Tech Tips

      Stake the shaft nut after the axle hub bearing looseness and axle hub runout inspections.

  32. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

  33. INSTALL COWL TOP VENTILATOR LOUVER


    1. A01GM4S

      for LHD:

      Install the 6 clips and cowl top ventilator louver RH.

      Note

      If the cowl top ventilator louver RH is not properly installed, water may leak into the engine room and cause malfunctions. Therefore, make sure the cowl top ventilator louver RH is installed properly.

    2. A01GI9P

      for RHD:

      Install the 6 clips and cowl top ventilator louver LH.

      Note

      If the cowl top ventilator louver LH is not properly installed, water may leak into the engine room and cause malfunctions. Therefore, make sure the cowl top ventilator louver LH is installed properly.

  34. PERFORM INITIALIZATION


    1. Perform the initialization Click here.

      Note

      Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

  35. STABILIZE SUSPENSION (for 2WD)


    1. Install the front wheel.

      Torque:
      140 N*m  { 1428 kgf*cm, 103 ft.*lbf }
    2. Lower the vehicle and start the engine. Then fill the pneumatic cylinder with front shock absorber assembly LH with air.

    3. Bounce the vehicle up and down several times to stabilize the front suspension.

    4. Remove the front wheel.

      Note

      Do not turn the engine switch on (IG).

    5. A01GIRZ

      Jack up the front suspension lower arm with a wooden block between the jack and front suspension lower arm. Apply a load to the front suspension so that the front suspension lower arm is placed in a horizontal position.

  36. STABILIZE SUSPENSION (for AWD)


    1. Install the front wheels.

      Torque:
      140 N*m  { 1428 kgf*cm, 103 ft.*lbf }
    2. Lower the vehicle and start the engine. Then fill the pneumatic cylinder with front shock absorber assembly LH with air.

      Tech Tips

      If the vehicle height is not restored within 2 minutes, stop the engine and then start the engine again.

    3. Bounce the vehicle up and down several times to stabilize the front suspension.

    4. Remove the front wheels.

      Note

      Do not turn the power switch ON (IG).

    5. A01GN88

      Jack up the front suspension lower arm with a wooden block between the jack and front suspension lower arm. Apply a load to the front suspension so that the front suspension lower arm is horizontal.

  37. TIGHTEN FRONT NO. 2 SUSPENSION LOWER ARM ASSEMBLY LH (for 2WD)


    1. A01GMFP

      Tighten the installation nut of the front No. 2 suspension lower arm assembly LH.

      Torque:
      145 N*m  { 1479 kgf*cm, 107 ft.*lbf }
    2. A01GHOG

      Tighten the installation nut of the steering knuckle.

      Torque:
      145 N*m  { 1479 kgf*cm, 107 ft.*lbf }

      Note

      If it is necessary to align the holes for the clips after installing the nuts, the nuts can be tightened up to 60° more.

    3. Install a new clip.

    4. A01GM42

      Tighten the installation bolt of the shock absorber cylinder.

      Torque:
      108 N*m  { 1101 kgf*cm, 80 ft.*lbf }
  38. TIGHTEN LOWER FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER BRACKET SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (for AWD)


    1. A01GL1O

      Tighten the lower side nut of the lower front shock absorber bracket sub-assembly LH.

      Torque:
      112 N*m  { 1142 kgf*cm, 83 ft.*lbf }
  39. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL

    Torque:
    140 N*m  { 1428 kgf*cm, 103 ft.*lbf }
  40. INSPECT AND ADJUST FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT (for 2WD)


    1. Check and adjust the front wheel alignment Click here.
