DIFFERENTIAL SIDE GEAR SHAFT OIL SEAL (for LSD) REPLACEMENT

Tech Tips


  • Use the same procedure for the RH side and LH side.

  • The following procedure is for the LH side.


  1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL

  2. DRAIN DIFFERENTIAL OIL


    1. Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, remove the filler plug and gasket.

    2. Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, remove the drain plug and gasket and drain the oil.

    3. Install the differential drain plug and a new gasket.

      Torque:
      49 N*m  { 500 kgf*cm, 36 ft.*lbf }
  3. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

  4. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL SIDE GEAR SHAFT OIL SEAL

      Using SST, remove the rear differential side gear shaft oil seal.

  5. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL SIDE GEAR SHAFT OIL SEAL


    1. A01GLXJE02

      Using SST and a hammer, install a new rear differential side gear shaft oil seal.

      Oil seal installation depth
      -0.5 to 0.5 mm (-0.0197 to 0.0197 in.)

      Note


      • Make sure to check the identification marks on the oil seals before installation because the part numbers differ between the left and right sides.

      • To ensure a proper seal, evenly tap in the rear differential side gear shaft oil seal.

      • After installing the oil seal, tap it in until the surface is flush with the rear differential carrier.

  6. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

  7. ADD DIFFERENTIAL OIL


    1. A01GL7L

      Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, remove the differential filler plug and gasket.

    2. Add oil.

      Standard capacity
      1.30 to 1.40 liters (1.38 to 1.48 US qts, 1.15 to 1.23 Imp. qts)
      Oil grade
      Toyota Genuine Differential gear oil LX 75W-85 GL-5 or equivalent
    3. Check the oil level.

    4. Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, install the differential filler plug and a new gasket.

      Torque:
      49 N*m  { 500 kgf*cm, 36 ft.*lbf }

      Note

      After replacing the oil, recheck the oil level after driving.

  8. INSPECT FOR DIFFERENTIAL OIL LEAK

  9. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE

  10. INSTALL REAR WHEEL

    Torque:
    140 N*m  { 1427 kgf*cm, 103 ft.*lbf }
  11. CHECK FOR SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL

  12. PERFORM PARKING BRAKE SHOE BEDDING

  13. INSPECT AND ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT
