SRS (SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM) AIRBAG SYSTEM
General Description
The driver and front passenger SRS airbags help reduce the shocks to the head and chest of the driver and front passenger in the event of a frontal collision, to supplement the protective function of the seat belts.
The SRS side and curtain shield airbags are used to help reduce the shocks to the head and chest of the driver, front passenger, and rear outer passenger in the event of a severe side impact collision.
The airbag sensor assembly includes a fuel cut control that stops the fuel pump when any airbags are deployed.
An airbag cut-off switch, which disables the deployment of the passenger airbag and the passenger seat side airbag when deemed necessary, is provided as standard equipment on all models.
AIRBAG FOR FRONTAL COLLISION
General
The driver and front passenger SRS airbags have been designed to work in conjunction with front collision impact absorbing structures to help reduce the impact to the head and chest in the event of a frontal collision. All these airbags deploy simultaneously and supplement the protective function of the seat belts.
An electrical type deceleration sensor is built into the airbag sensor assembly. When this sensor detects the deceleration of the vehicle that occurs during a frontal collision, the airbag sensor assembly determines that a collision has occurred.
Airbag Cut-off Switch
A switch to disable the deployment of the front passenger airbag and the passenger seat side airbag is provided as standard equipment. This switch can be used if the deployment of those airbags is dangerous, such as when the passenger is wearing a CRS (Child Restraint System) seat belt.
This switch is located on the driver side of the instrument panel. It is operated ON/OFF by the ignition key. Once the airbag manual ON-OFF switch is turned to OFF, the front passenger airbag and the passenger seat side airbag are disabled, regardless of the collision conditions.
The driver can determine the state of the airbag cut-off switch by way of the SRS warning light after turning the ignition switch ON.
The airbag sensor assembly performs a primary check on the system by illuminating the SRS warning light for approximately 6 seconds after the ignition switch is turned ON. Thereafter, the warning light will turn ON or OFF in accordance with the state of the airbag cut-off switch, as indicated in the table below.
| State of Airbag Cut-off switch | State of SRS Warning Light |
|---|---|
| OFF | ON (unable to deploy front passenger airbag and passenger side airbag) |
| ON | OFF (able to deploy front passenger airbag and passenger side airbag) |
AIRBAG FOR SIDE COLLISION
General
The airbag system for severe side collisions consists of two airbags: side airbag and curtain shield airbag. These airbags deploy simultaneously.
When the side airbag sensor detects a side collision, the side and curtain shield airbags on the collision side of the vehicle are deployed simultaneously. However, when a collision occurs on the passenger side and the airbag cut-off switch is turned OFF, the passenger side airbags will not be deployed.
