POWER STEERING GEAR INSPECTION

  1. INSPECT TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY LH

    A0138JEE01

    1. Secure the tie rod end sub-assembly LH boll joint in a vise between aluminum plates.

      Note

      Do not overtighten the vise.

    2. Install the castle nut onto the stud bolt.

    3. Flip the ball joint back and forth 5 times or more.

    4. Set a torque wrench on the nut, turn the ball joint continuously at a rate of 3 to 5 seconds per turn, and check the turning torque on the 5th turn.

      Torque:
      2.0 N*m  { 20.4 kgf*cm, 18 in.*lbf, or less }

If the turning torque is outside the specifications, replace the tie rod end sub-assembly LH with a new one.

  2. INSPECT TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY RH

    Tech Tips

Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

  3. INSPECT TOTAL PRELOAD

    A0137GNE01

    1. Using SST, inspect the total preload.

      SST
      09616-00011
      Standard Preload (turning)
      0.6 to 1.2 N*m (6.1 to 12.2 kgf*cm, 5 to 11 in.*lbf)

      Note

Inspect around the steering rack center position.

If the total preload is outside the specifications, replace the steering gear assembly with a new one.

  4. INSPECT STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY

    A01382QE01

    1. Using SST, turn the pinion shaft and check that the RH and LH rack boots expand and contract smoothly.

If the rack boots do not expand or contract smoothly, reinstall them using a new rack boot clamp.
