COOLING FAN SYSTEM ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

  1. INSPECT COOLING FAN OPERATION WITH LOW TEMPERATURE (Below 82°C (180°F))

    1. Turn the ignition switch on.

    2. Check that the cooling fan stops.

If not, check the cooling fan relay or cooling fan resistor and engine coolant temperature sensor. Next, check for an open in the circuit between the cooling fan relay and engine coolant temperature sensor.

  2. INSPECT COOLING FAN OPERATION WITH HIGH TEMPERATURE (Above 97°C (207°F))

    1. Start the engine, and raise engine coolant temperature to above 97°C (207°F).

      Tech Tips

Engine coolant temperature is detected by the engine coolant temperature sensor on the water outlet housing/thermostat.

    2. Check that cooling fan rotates.

If not, check the fuses, cooling fan relay, ECM, cooling fan and engine coolant temperature sensor.

  3. INSPECT COOLING FAN MOTOR

    1. Disconnect the cooling fan motor connector.

    2. When battery voltage is applied to the cooling fan connector, check that the cooling fan motor operates smoothly.

    3. Connect the cooling fan motor connector.
