| P0336 | Crankshaft Position Sensor Range / Performance |
| P0337 | Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit Low Input |
| P1669 | Engine Speed not Plausible |
| P1672 | Supervision of Maximum Engine Speed |
DESCRIPTION
The crankshaft position sensor system consists of a crankshaft timing pulley and hall type sensor. The crankshaft timing pulley has teeth. The pick up coil is made of an iron core and magnet. The crankshaft timing pulley rotates, and a pulse signal is created as each tooth passes through the pickup coil. The target is composed of 60 (58+2) magnetic pole pairs distributed on the periphery of which two poles are absent to mark the crank position.
Based on the signal, the ECM calculates the crankshaft position and engine RPM. Using these calculations, the common rail system is controlled.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
Tech Tips
When DTC P0336 or P0337 is detected, check the engine speed by selecting the following menu items on the intelligent tester: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Engine Spd.
If the ECM is replaced, variant coding (variant coding indicates the presence of vehicle accessory items, A/C, etc.) should always be performed Click here.
Before removing the ECM and the peripheral parts, wait at least 3 minute after turning the ignition switch off (If the cooling fan is operating, remove the ECM and the peripheral parts after the fan stops.).
PROCEDURE
READ VALUE OF INTELLIGENT TESTER (ENGINE SPEED)
Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and turn the intelligent tester on.
Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Engine Spd.
Read the value.
| OK |
|---|
| The value is the same as the actual engine speed. |
Tech Tips
If the crankshaft position sensor malfunctions, the engine usually cannot be started.
