P1669 Engine Speed not Plausible
P1672 Supervision of Maximum Engine Speed

DESCRIPTION

The crankshaft position sensor system consists of a crankshaft timing pulley and hall type sensor. The crankshaft timing pulley has teeth. The pick up coil is made of an iron core and magnet. The crankshaft timing pulley rotates, and a pulse signal is created as each tooth passes through the pickup coil. The target is composed of 60 (58+2) magnetic pole pairs distributed on the periphery of which two poles are absent to mark the crank position.

Based on the signal, the ECM calculates the crankshaft position and engine RPM. Using these calculations, the common rail system is controlled.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

Tech Tips

  • When DTC P0336 or P0337 is detected, check the engine speed by selecting the following menu items on the intelligent tester: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Engine Spd.

  • If the ECM is replaced, variant coding (variant coding indicates the presence of vehicle accessory items, A/C, etc.) should always be performed Click here.

  • Before removing the ECM and the peripheral parts, wait at least 3 minute after turning the ignition switch off (If the cooling fan is operating, remove the ECM and the peripheral parts after the fan stops.).

PROCEDURE

  1. READ VALUE OF INTELLIGENT TESTER (ENGINE SPEED)

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and turn the intelligent tester on.

    3. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Engine Spd.

    4. Read the value.

      OK
The value is the same as the actual engine speed.

      Tech Tips

If the crankshaft position sensor malfunctions, the engine usually cannot be started.

    NG
    OK
  2. INSPECT ECM (VOLTAGE)

    1. A0137ZME01

Disconnect the B42 crankshaft position sensor connector.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage
      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      VNE (B42-1) - Body ground 4.7 to 5.3 V

    NG
    OK
  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR - ECM)

    1. A0137GOE01

      Disconnect the B53 ECM connector.

    2. Disconnect the B42 crankshaft position sensor connector.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance
      Check for open
      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      NE+ (B53-19) - NE+ (B42-2) Below 1 Ω
      NE- (B53-20) - NE- (B42-3) Below 1 Ω
      Check for short
      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      NE+ (B53-19) or NE (B42-2) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
NE- (B53-20) or NE- (B42-3) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

    NG
    OK
  4. CHECK SENSOR INSTALLATION (CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR)

    1. Check the installation condition of the crankshaft position sensor.

      OK
      The sensor is installed correctly.

    NG
    OK
  5. CHECK SENSOR AIRGAP (CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR)

    1. Measure the crankshaft position sensor airgap.

      Standard
      0.5 to 1.5 mm (0.020 to 0.059 in.)

    NG
    OK
  6. INSPECT CRANKSHAFT TIMING PULLEY

    1. Check the crankshaft timing pulley.

      OK
The crankshaft timing pulley does not have any cracks or deformation.

    NG
    OK
  7. CHECK POWER SOURCE CIRCUIT

    1. Check that the battery voltage, ECM power source voltage, and the ground condition of the ECM are normal.

      OK
The battery voltage, ECM power source voltage, and the ground condition of the ECM are normal.

      Tech Tips

Make sure that the battery is not discharged during the inspection.

    NG
    OK
  8. REPLACE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR

  9. CHECK IF DTC RECURS (P0336 AND/OR P0337)

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Clear the DTC Click here.

    3. Start the engine and drive the vehicle for 20 minutes.

    4. Turn the intelligent tester on.

    5. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.
