P0501 Vehicle Speed Sensor Range / Performance

DESCRIPTION

Vehicles detect the vehicle speed using the skid control ECU and wheel speed sensor. The wheel speed sensor monitors the wheel rotation speed and sends a signal to the skid control ECU. The skid control ECU converts the wheel speed signal into a 4-pulse signal and transmits it to the ECM. The ECM determines the vehicle speed based on the frequency of the pulse signal.

Tech Tips

DTC P0501 is detected when the vehicle continues to decelerate for more than 3 seconds after driving at an engine speed of 3000 rpm or more (any gear position).

Tech Tips

Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE


  1. READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (VEHICLE SPD)


    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Start the engine and turn the tester on.

    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Vehicle SPD.

    4. Check the vehicle speed when the vehicle is running.

      OK
      Same value as the actual vehicle speed.

  2. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (SKID CONTROL ECU - ECM)


    1. Disconnect the B26 ECM connector.

    2. Disconnect the A46 skid control ECU connector (w/o VSC).

    3. Disconnect the A41 skid control ECU connector (w/ VSC).

    4. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below (w/o VSC).

      Standard Resistance
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      B26-38 (SPD) - A46-2 (SP1) Always Below 1 Ω
      B26-38 (SPD) or A46-2 (SP1) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    5. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below (w/ VSC).

      Tech Tips

      When checking for an open circuit, the wire resistance between connectors indicates a value including the resistance of the ABS resistor.

  3. CHECK COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY (SPEEDOMETER OPERATION)


    1. Drive the vehicle and check if the operation of the speedometer in the combination meter assembly is normal.

      OK
      Operation of the speedometer in the combination meter assembly is normal.

      Tech Tips


      • The vehicle speed sensor is operating normally if the speedometer reading is normal.
