DESCRIPTION

The O/D direct clutch speed sensor (NCO) detects the rotation speed of the O/D input shaft from the rotation of the O/D direct clutch drum. Its construction is the same as that of the speed sensor (SP2).

By comparing the O/D direct clutch speed signal and speed sensor (SP2) signal, the ECM detects the shift timing of the gears and appropriately controls the engine torque and hydraulic pressure in response to various conditions, thus achieving smooth gear shift.

    3. T/M input shaft rpm: 300 rpm or less

    4. T/M output shaft rpm: 500 rpm or more

    5. Park/neutral position switch:


      • NSW input signal is OFF

      • R input signal is OFF

      • L input signal is OFF

    6. Shift solenoid valves and park/neutral position switch are in normal operation


  • Open or short in speed sensor (NCO) circuit

  • Speed sensor (NCO)

  • ECM

  • Automatic transmission (clutch, brake or gear, etc.)

Reference (Using an oscilloscope):

Check the waveform between terminals NCO+ and NCO- of the ECM connector.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

This DTC indicates that pulse is not output from the speed sensor NCO (O/D (input) speed sensor) or is output only a little. The NCO terminal of the ECM detects the speed signal from the speed sensor (NCO) (input RPM). The ECM outputs a gearshift signal comparing the input speed sensor (NCO) with the output speed sensor (SP2).

When the output shaft speed is higher than the expected value and the input shaft speed is 300 rpm or less while running with the shift lever on D, the ECM will conclude that there is a malfunction of the input speed sensor (NCO). The ECM will illuminate the MIL and a DTC is set.

    Using the intelligent tester to read the Data List allows the values or states of switches, sensors, actuators and other items to be read without removing any parts. This non-intrusive inspection can be very useful because intermittent conditions or signals may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed. Reading the Data List information early in troubleshooting is one way to save diagnostic time.

    Note

    In the table below, the values listed under "Normal Condition" are reference values. Do not depend solely on these reference values when deciding whether a part is faulty or not.


    1. Warm up the engine.

    2. Turn the ignition switch off.

    3. Connect the Intelligent Tester to the DLC3.

    4. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

    5. Turn on the tester.

    6. Select the item "Enter / Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List".

    7. Follow the instructions on the tester and read the Data List.

        Input Turbine Speed (NCO) is nearly equal to engine speed

      Tech Tips


      • SPD (NCO) is always 0 while driving:

        Open or short in the sensor or circuit.

      • SPD (NCO) is always more than 0 and less than 300 rpm while driving the vehicle at 50 km/h (31 mph) or more:

        Sensor trouble, improper installation, or intermittent connection trouble of the circuit.
