12 Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction

DESCRIPTION

The crankshaft position sensor in the Engine Control System contains a signal plate and a pickup coil for TDC signal. The TDC signal plate has 1 tooth on its outer circumference. The TDC signal sensor generates 1 signal for every engine revolution. The ECM detects the top dead center by the TDC signals.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

PROCEDURE


  1. INSPECT CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR


    1. A01BFKAE01

      Check the crankshaft position sensor installation.

    2. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance
      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      1 - 2 19 to 32 Ω (Cold)
      1 - 2 24 to 37 Ω (Hot)

      Tech Tips

      "Cold" and "Hot" in the following sentence express the temperature of the sensor itself. "Cold" is from -10°C (14°F) to 50°C (122°F) and "Hot" is from 50°C (122°F) to 100°C (212°F).

  2. INSPECT ECM


    1. A01BE6TE01

      Connect the crankshaft position sensor connector.

    2. While cranking or idling, measure the waveform according to the value(s) in the table below.

      NE+ (D2-19) - NE- (D2-18) Correct waveform shown

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ECM - CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR)

      Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector.

    2. Disconnect the ECM D2 connector.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance (Check for open)
      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      + (D62-1) - TDC+ (D2-17) Below 1 Ω
      - (D62-2) - TDC- (D2-16) Below 1 Ω
      Standard resistance (Check for short)
      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      TDC+ (D2-17) - TDC- (D2-16) 10 kΩ or higher
      TDC+ (D2-17) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      TDC- (D2-16) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
