DESCRIPTION

While the engine is being cranked, current flows from terminal ST1 of the ignition switch assembly to the park/neutral position switch assembly and also flows to terminal STA of the ECM (STA Signal).

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

Note:

Inspect the fuses for circuits related to this system before performing the following inspection procedure.

Tip:

This diagnosis procedure is based on the premise that the engine can crank normally. If the engine cannot crank normally, proceed to Problem Symptoms Table (Click here).

PROCEDURE


  1. Click here

    READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (STARTER SIGNAL)


    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch on (IG).

    3. Turn the tester on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Starter Signal.

    5. Read the value displayed on the tester when the ignition switch is turned to ON and engine cranking position.

      OK
      Ignition Switch Position Starter Signal
      Ignition switch on (IG) Close (starter signal off)
      Engine cranking position Open (starter signal on)

    CHECK ST RELAY (POWER SOURCE)


    1. A017EV2E04

      Remove the ST relay from the engine room relay block.

    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage
      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      ST relay terminal 2 - Body ground Engine cranking position 11 to 14 V

      Tip:

      The engine will not crank because the relay is not installed.

    3. Reinstall the ST relay.

    CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY)


    1. Remove the ST relay from the engine room relay block.

    2. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch assembly connector.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance (Check for Open)
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      ST relay terminal 2 - B5-5 Always Below 1 Ω
      Standard Resistance (Check for Short)
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      ST relay terminal 2 or B5-5 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Reinstall the ST relay.

    5. Reconnect the park/neutral position switch assembly connector.

    INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY


    1. Inspect the park/neutral position switch assembly (Click herefor U151E,Click herefor U151F).

    CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR


    1. Disconnect the ECM connector.

    2. Disconnect the ignition switch assembly connector.

    3. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch assembly connector.

    4. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance (Check for Open)
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      B42-2 (NSW) - D21-3 (ST1) Always Below 1 Ω
      Standard Resistance (Check for Short)
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      B42-2 (NSW) or D21-3 (ST1) or B5-4 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    6. Reconnect the ignition switch assembly connector.

    7. Reconnect the park/neutral position switch assembly connector.

    CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY - ECM)


    1. Disconnect the ECM connector.

    2. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch assembly connector.

    3. Remove the ST relay from the engine room relay block.

    4. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance (Check for Short)
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      B5-5 or D55-10 (STA) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    6. Reconnect the park/neutral position switch assembly connector.

    7. Reinstall the ST relay.
