POWER STEERING SYSTEM ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION


  1. CHECK STEERING EFFORT

    Note

    Some service operations affect the SRS airbags. Be sure to read the precautionary notice for the SRS airbags before servicing Click here.


    1. Stop the vehicle on a level, paved surface and turn the wheels straight ahead.

    2. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable from the battery.

      CAUTION:

      Wait for 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable to prevent the airbag working.

      Note

      When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected Click here.

    3. Remove the steering pad Click here.

    4. Connect the negative (-) battery cable to the battery.

      Note

      When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected Click here.

    5. Using a torque wrench, check if the steering wheel set nut is properly tightened.

      Torque:
      50 N*m  { 510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf }
    6. Start the engine and run it at idle.

    7. A017CLI

      Turn the steering wheel 90° to the right and check the steering effort (torque) while turning. Check in the opposite direction using the same method.

      Standard steering effort (Reference)
      6.5 N*m (66 kgf*cm, 58 in.*lbf) or less

      Tech Tips

      Check tire type, pressure, and the road surface before making your diagnosis.

    8. Align the front wheels straight ahead.

    9. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable from the battery.

      CAUTION:

      Wait for 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable to prevent the airbag working.

    10. Torque the steering wheel set nut.

      Torque:
      50 N*m  { 510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf }
    11. Install the steering pad Click here.

    12. Connect the negative (-) battery cable to the battery.

      Note

    13. Clear the DTCs Click here.

    14. Inspect the SRS warning light Click here.
