REAR AXLE SHAFT DISASSEMBLY


  1. REMOVE REAR SKID CONTROL ROTOR (w/ ABS)

      Temporarily install the nut to the rear brake backing plate No.1 bolt as shown in the illustration.

    2. Using a hammer, remove the 4 bolts from the rear axle shaft bearing case.

      Note

      Do not reuse the nuts previously removed from the vehicle.

      Grind the bearing retainer inner and skid control rotor rear surfaces using a grinder, then chisel them out with a chisel.

      Note

      Be careful not to damage the rear axle shaft and backing plate.

  2. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT SNAP RING

      Using a snap ring expander, remove the rear axle shaft snap ring.

  3. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT

      Install a washer and nut to the rear brake backing plate No.1 bolt as shown in the illustration.

    2. Install the rear brake backing plate No.1 bolt by tightening the nut.

      Position SST on the rear brake backing plate with the 4 nuts.

    4. Using SST and a press, remove the rear axle shaft from the rear axle shaft bearing.

      Note

      Be careful not to drop the rear axle shaft.

  4. REMOVE REAR AXLE BEARING RETAINER INNER


    1. Remove the rear axle bearing retainer inner.

  5. REMOVE BRAKE DRUM OIL DEFLECTOR

      Using SST, remove the rear axle hub bolts.

    2. Remove the brake drum oil deflector and brake drum oil deflector gasket.

  6. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT OUTER OIL SEAL

      Using SST, remove the rear axle shaft outer oil seal.

  7. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT BEARING

      Using SST and a press, remove the rear axle shaft bearing from the rear axle shaft bearing case.

  8. REMOVE REAR AXLE BEARING CASE


    1. A01BBPZ

      Temporarily install the nut to the rear brake backing plate No.1 bolt as shown in the illustration.

    2. Using a hammer, remove the 4 bolts from the rear axle shaft bearing case.

      Note

      Do not reuse the nuts previously removed from the vehicle.

  9. INSPECT REAR AXLE SHAFT


    1. A01BF54

      Using a dial indicator, inspect the rear axle shaft runout.

      Maximum
      1.5 mm (0.0591 in.)

      Note

      Ensure that the dial indicator is set at right angles to the measurement surface.

      If runout exceeds the maximum, replace the rear axle shaft.

    2. Check the rear axle shaft for damage.
