REMOVE REAR WHEEL
REMOVE REAR BRAKE DRUM SUB-ASSEMBLY
Release the parking brake lever, and remove the brake drum.
Tech Tips
If the brake drum cannot be removed easily, perform the following steps.
Remove the hole plug and insert a screwdriver through the hole in the backing plate, and hold the automatic adjusting lever away from the adjuster.
Using another screwdriver, contract the brake shoe adjuster by turning the adjusting wheel.
REMOVE REAR AXLE BRAKE DRUM GASKET
REMOVE AUTOMATIC ADJUST LEVER
Remove the automatic adjust lever and the tension spring.
SEPARATE PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT SET
Using SST, remove the upper side tension spring from the brake shoe.
REMOVE FRONT BRAKE SHOE
Using a needle-nose pliers, remove the anchor side tension spring.
Using SST, remove the cup, shoe hold-down sprig and pin.
Remove the parking brake shoe lower strut.
Separate the brake shoe return spring, and remove the front brake shoe.
REMOVE REAR BRAKE SHOE
Using SST, remove the cup, shoe hold-down sprig and pin.
Disconnect the parking brake cable No.3 and remove the rear brake shoe.
REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT SET
Using a screwdriver, remove the C-washer, brake shoe lever, rear cushion lever and brake shoe strut set from the brake shoe.
Remove the adjusting bolt and tension spring from the brake shoe strut set.
REMOVE REAR AXLE HUB BOLT
Install a washer and nut to the bolt as shown in the illustration.
Using SST and a screwdriver or an equivalent to hold the hub sub-assembly, remove the rear axle hub bolt.
Note
Do not damage the threads of the hub bolts.
INSTALL REAR AXLE HUB BOLT
Install a washer and nut to a new bolt as shown in the illustration.
Using a screwdriver or an equivalent to hold the hub sub assembly, install the rear axle hub bolt by tightening the nut.
Note
Do not damage the threads of the hub bolts.
INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT SET
Apply the high temperature grease to the adjusting bolt.
Install the tension spring to the show strut set.
INSTALL REAR BRAKE SHOE
Using pliers, install the rear brake shoe, shoe strut set, rear cushion lever and shoe lever with a new C-washer.
Connect the parking brake cable No.3 to the front brake shoe.
Using SST, install the rear brake shoe, pin, shoe hold down spring and shoe hold down cup.
INSTALL FRONT BRAKE SHOE
Install the return spring to each brake shoe.
Using SST, install the front brake shoe, pin, shoe hold down spring and shoe hold down cup.
Install the brake shoe lower strut.
Note
Make sure that the shoe lower strut and brake rear cushion lever are securely engaged.
Using needle-nose pliers, install the tension spring.
CONNECT PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT SET
Using SST, install the upper side tension spring.
INSTALL AUTOMATIC ADJUST LEVER
Install the automatic adjust lever and tension spring.
Note
Make sure to install the automatic adjust lever between the groove of the shoe strut set and brake shoe.
INSPECT REAR DRUM BRAKE
Check the each part is installed properly.
Note
There should be no oil or grease adhering to the friction surfaces of the shoe lining and drum.
If they are not installed correctly, reinstall them as shown in the illustration.
INSTALL REAR AXLE BRAKE DRUM GASKET
Install the new brake drum gasket to the rear axle shaft.
INSTALL REAR BRAKE DRUM SUB-ASSEMBLY
ADJUST REAR DRUM BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE
Using a screwdriver from a service hole, turn the adjuster to expand the shoes so that the brake shoes touch the brake drum.
Using another screwdriver, push up the automatic adjust lever and turn the adjuster to contract the shoes so that the brake shoe does not touch the brake drum. Then turn the adjuster another 180 degrees to further contract the shoes.
Install the hole plug.
INSTALL REAR WHEEL
