PRE-HEATING SYSTEM (w/o DPF) ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

  1. INSPECT ILLUMINATION DURATION OF GLOW INDICATOR LIGHT

    1. Inspect the light illumination duration.

      1. Turn the ignition switch to ON, and then measure the light illumination duration.

        Light illumination duration
        Refer to the graph.

*a Light Illumination Duration *b Engine Coolant Temperature
      2. Turn the ignition switch off.

        Tech Tips

Actual light illumination duration may vary slightly from the graph.

If the result is not as specified, inspect the ECM, engine coolant temperature sensor, glow plug and glow relay.

  2. INSPECT PRE-HEATING

    1. Inspect the pre-heating time.

      *a Pre-heating Time *b Battery Voltage

      1. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Measure how long it takes for battery voltage to be applied to the glow plugs.

        Standard Time
        Engine Coolant Temperature Specified Condition
        40°C (104°F) or higher 1 second
        Below 40°C (104°F)

        Refer to the graph

        (maximum: 21 seconds)

If the result is not as specified, inspect the ECM, engine coolant temperature sensor, glow plug and glow relay.

      2. Turn the ignition switch off.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to START. Check that battery voltage is applied to the glow plugs.

    3. While cranking the engine, measure how long it takes for battery voltage to be applied to the glow plugs.

      Standard Time
      Engine Coolant Temperature Specified Condition
      40°C (104°F) or higher 1 second
      Below 40°C (104°F)

      Refer to the graph

      (maximum: 21 seconds)

If the result is not as specified, inspect the ECM, engine coolant temperature sensor, glow plug and glow relay.

  3. INSPECT AFTER GLOW TIME

    1. Remove the glow relay.

      *1 After Glow Time (Sec.)
      *2 Engine Coolant Temperature °C (°F)

After the engine starts, measure the length of time that battery voltage remains present.

      Standard After Glow Time
      Tester Connection Specified Condition
2 - Body ground Refer to the graph above*1

*1: After glow time changes depending on atmospheric pressure and engine coolant temperature.

If the result is not as specified, check the ECM, engine coolant temperature sensor, glow plug and glow relay.

    3. Install the glow relay.
