SFI SYSTEM (w/ Secondary Air Injection System), Diagnostic DTC:P0443

DTC Code DTC Name
P0443 Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit

DESCRIPTION

To reduce hydrocarbon emissions, evaporated fuel from the fuel tank is routed through a charcoal canister to the intake manifold for combustion in the cylinders.

The ECM changes the duty signals to the EVAP VSV so that the intake amount of hydrocarbon emissions is appropriate for the driving conditions (engine load, engine speed, vehicle speed, etc.) after the engine is warmed up.

DTC No. DTC Detection Condition Trouble Area

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

Note

Inspect the fuses of circuits related to this system before performing the following inspection procedure.

Tech Tips

Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (ACTIVATE THE VSV FOR EVAP CONTROL)

    1. A01BCWSE03

Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Disconnect the vacuum hose (charcoal canister side) from the EVAP VSV.

    3. Start the engine.

    4. Turn the intelligent tester on.

    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Activate the VSV for Evap Control.

    6. Place your finger on port E. Check if the disconnected port applies suction to your finger when operating the EVAP VSV using the intelligent tester.

      OK
      Tester Operation Specified Condition
VSV ON EVAP VSV port applies suction to finger
VSV OFF EVAP VSV port applies no suction to finger

    NG
    OK
  2. INSPECT EVAP VSV

    1. Inspect the EVAP VSV Click here.

      (to EVAP VSV)

      Disconnect the EVAP VSV connector.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage
Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      D28-2 - Body ground Ignition switch ON 11 to 14 V

    NG
    OK
  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (EVAP VSV - ECM)

    1. Disconnect the EVAP VSV connector.

    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      D28-1 - D97-62 (PRG) Always Below 1 Ω
D28-1 or D97-62 (PRG) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG
    OK
  5. PERFORM CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Turn the tester on.

    4. Clear the DTCs.

    5. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

    6. Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature is 75°C (167°F) or higher.

    7. Idle the engine for 15 minutes or more.

    8. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.

    9. Input the DTC: P0443.

    10. Check the DTC judgment result.

      Result
      Result Proceed to
NORMAL (DTC is not output) A
ABNORMAL (DTC P0443 is output) B

      Tech Tips

If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or N/A, drive the vehicle at a constant speed between 40 and 60 km/h (25 and 38 mph) for 10 minutes and check the DTC judgment result again.
