METER / GAUGE SYSTEM (for 1KD-FTV) Speedometer Malfunction

DESCRIPTION

The combination meter assembly controls the speedometer in accordance with vehicle speed signals from the speedometer sensor.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

PROCEDURE


  1. INSPECT COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY

    1. Check the input signal waveform.


      1. Remove the combination meter assembly with the connectors still connected.

      2. Connect the oscilloscope to terminals C13-36 and body ground.

      3. Start the engine.

        Check the signal waveform according to the condition (s) in the table below.

      Tech Tips

      As the vehicle speed increases, the cycle of the signal waveform narrows.

    1. Measure the resistance.

      Standard resistance
      Tester Connection Specified condition
      C13-5 - Body ground Below 1 Ω

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (SPEED SENSOR - COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY)

    1. Disconnect the C13 combination meter connector.

    2. Disconnect the S1 speed sensor connector.

    3. Measure the resistance.

      Standard resistance
      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      C13-36 - S1-3 Below 1 Ω
      C13-5 - S1-2 Below 1 Ω
      C13-36 - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Measure the voltage.

      Standard voltage
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      S1-1 - Body ground Ignition switch OFF → ON Below 1 V → 11 to 14 V
    5. Reconnect the connectors.
