REAR BRAKE (for 2 Leading Shoe Type) INSPECTION


  1. INSPECT BRAKE DRUM INSIDE DIAMETER

    1. Using a brake drum gauge or equivalent, measure the inside diameter of the drum.

      Single tire
      Standard inside diameter
      290.0 mm (11.417 in.)
      Maximum inside diameter
      292.0 mm (11.496 in.)
      Double tire (w/o ABS)
      Standard inside diameter
      260.0 mm (10.236 in.)
      Maximum inside diameter
      262.0 mm (10.315 in.)
      Double tire (w/ ABS)
      Standard inside diameter
      295.0 mm (11.614 in.)
      Maximum inside diameter
      297.0 mm (11.693 in.)
  2. INSPECT REAR DRUM BRAKE SHOE LINING THICKNESS


    1. Using a ruler, measure the thickness of the shoe lining.

      Standard thickness
      6.0 mm (0.236 in.)
      Double Tire
      6.5 mm (0.256 in.)
      Single Tire
      6.2 mm (0.244 in.)
      Minimum thickness
      1.0 mm (0.039in.)
  3. INSPECT BRAKE DRUM AND REAR DRUM BRAKE SHOE LINING FOR PROPER CONTACT


    1. Apply some chalk inside the brake drum, and rub the drum and the shoe together.

      If the contact between the brake lining and drum is improper, repair the lining with a shoe grinder, or replace the brake shoe assembly.

  4. INSPECT BRAKE WHEEL CYLINDER


    1. Check the cylinder bore and piston for rust or scoring.
