REAR AXLE SHAFT (for Single Tire) DISASSEMBLY

Tech Tips

Replace the RH side by the same procedures with the LH side.


  1. REMOVE SKID CONTROL ROTOR REAR (W/ABS)

      Attach 4 nuts to the serration bolts and remove the serration bolts from the backing plate using a hammer.

      Note

      Do not reuse the nuts previously removed from the vehicle.

    2. A01KF3Q

      Grind the retainer and sensor rotor surfaces using a grinder, then chisel them out with a chisel.

    3. Attach washers and nuts to the 4 serration bolts, then torque the nuts to install the serration bolts to the backing plate.

    4. Remove the 4 nuts from the serration bolts.

      Using a snap ring expander, remove the rear axle shaft snap ring.

      Position SST on the backing plate with the 4 nuts.

    7. Using a press, remove the rear axle shaft with the bearing retainer from the backing plate.

  2. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH (W/O ABS)

      Using a snap ring expander, remove the rear axle shaft snap ring.

      Note

      Do not reuse the nuts previously removed from the vehicle.

    2. A01KHJME01

      Position SST on the backing plate with the 4 nuts.

    3. Using a press, remove the rear axle shaft with the bearing retainer from the backing plate.

  3. REMOVE REAR AXLE LH HUB BOLT

      Using SST, remove the hub bolt and brake drum oil deflector LH.

  4. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT OUTER OIL SEAL


    1. A01KFRUE01

      Using SST, remove the rear axle shaft oil seal outer.

  5. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH BEARING

      Using SST and a press, remove the rear axle shaft bearing RH.

  6. REMOVE REAR AXLE BEARING CASE LH

      Attach 4 nuts to the serration bolts and remove the serration bolts from the backing plate using a hammer.

      Note

      Do not reuse the nuts previously removed from the vehicle.

  7. INSPECT REAR AXLE SHAFT LH


    1. A01KGCO

      Using a dial indicator, inspect the axle shaft runout and flange runout.

      Maximum shaft runout
      2.0 mm (0.079 in.)
      Maximum flange runout
      0.2 mm (0.008 in.)

      If the rear axle shaft or flange is damaged or worn, or if runout is not within the specification, replace the rear axle shaft.

  8. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH OIL SEAL

      Using SST, remove the rear axle shaft oil seal RH.
