Tech Tips

Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions when a malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was running or stopped, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (ACTIVATE THE VACUUM SWITCHING VALVE FOR SWIRL CONTROL VALVE)

    1. A01KIFVE04
      Text in Illustration
      *1 Air
      *2 Air Filter
      *a VSV: on
      *b VSV: off

Connect an intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the VSV for swirl control valve.

    3. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.

    4. Select the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Activate the VSV for Swirl Control Valve.

    5. Check the operation.

      OK
      Tester Operation Specified Condition
VSV ON Air from port E flows out through port F
VSV OFF Air from port E flows out through air filter
    6. Reconnect the vacuum hoses to the VSV for swirl control valve.

    OK
    NG
  2. INSPECT VACUUM SWITCHING VALVE FOR SWIRL CONTROL VALVE (RESISTANCE)

    1. A01KHW7E07
      Text in Illustration
*1 VSV for Swirl Control Valve Connector
      *a Component Side
      *b Front View

Disconnect the S12 VSV for swirl control valve connector.

    2. Measure the resistance of the VSV for swirl control valve.

      Standard resistance
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 33 to 39 Ω
    3. Reconnect the VSV for swirl control valve connector.

    NG
    OK
  3. INSPECT VACUUM SWITCHING VALVE FOR SWIRL CONTROL VALVE (POWER SOURCE VOLTAGE)

    1. A01KEWME02
      Text in Illustration
*1 VSV for Swirl Control Valve Connector
      *a Wire Harness Side

Disconnect the S12 VSV for swirl control valve connector.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Measure the voltage between the terminal of the wire harness side connector and body ground.

      Standard voltage
      Tester Connection Specified Condition
S12-2 (VSV for swirl control valve) - Body ground 11 to 14 V
    4. Reconnect the VSV for swirl control valve connector.

    OK
    NG
  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (VSV FOR SWIRL CONTROL VALVE - EFI MAIN RELAY)

    1. Inspect the EFI3 fuse.

      1. Remove the EFI3 fuse from the R/B No. 2.

      2. Check the EFI3 fuse resistance.

        Standard resistance
        Below 1 Ω
      3. Reinstall the EFI3 fuse.

    2. Disconnect the S12 VSV for swirl control valve connector.

    3. Remove the EFI MAIN relay from the R/B No. 2.

    4. Check the resistance.

      Standard resistance (Check for open)
      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      S12-2 - R/B No. 2 (EFI MAIN relay terminal 3) Below 1 Ω
      Standard resistance (Check for short)
      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
S12-2 or R/B No. 2 (EFI MAIN relay terminal 3) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    5. Reconnect the VSV connector.

    6. Reinstall the EFI MAIN relay.

    NG
    OK
  5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (VACUUM SWITCHING VALVE FOR SWIRL CONTROL VALVE - ECM)

    1. Disconnect the S12 VSV for swirl control valve connector.

    2. Disconnect the E10 ECM connector.

    3. Check the resistance.
