DESCRIPTION

The throttle control motor opens and closes the throttle valve according to a duty-cycle (signal) from the ECM.

Condition (a) or (b) continues for more than 1 second

(a) Battery voltage is 10 V or more


  • Throttle motor's activation duty is out of the normal range (Activation duty: 10 to 90)

(b) Open, short or stuck in throttle sensor

  • Open or short in throttle control motor circuit

  • Throttle control motor (built into diesel throttle body assembly)

  • ECM

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

Tech Tips

Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was moving or stationary, whether the engine was warmed up or not, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.

PROCEDURE


  1. CHECK THROTTLE CONTROL MOTOR (VCR VOLTAGE)

      (to Throttle Control Motor)

      Disconnect the throttle control motor connector.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage
      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      I12-2 (+B) - Body ground Ignition switch ON 11 to 14 V

    4. Reconnect the throttle control motor connector.

  2. CHECK THROTTLE CONTROL MOTOR

    REPLACE DIESEL THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY (THROTTLE CONTROL MOTOR) Click here

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (THROTTLE CONTROL MOTOR - ECM)


    1. Disconnect the throttle control motor connector.

    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance (Check for Open)
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      I12-1 (DUTY) - E23-4 (LUSL) Always Below 1 Ω
      I12-3 (GND) - Body ground Always Below 1 Ω
      Standard Resistance (Check for Short)
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      I12-1 (DUTY) or E23-4 (LUSL) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    4. Reconnect the throttle control motor connector.

    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.
