FRONT SEAT OUTER BELT ASSEMBLY DISPOSAL

CAUTION:

Before performing pre-disposal deployment of any SRS part, review and closely follow all applicable environmental and hazardous material regulations. Predisposal deployment may be considered hazardous material treatment.


  1. PRECAUTION

    Tech Tips

    When scrapping vehicles equipped with a seat belt pretensioner or disposing of a front seat outer belt assembly LH (with seat belt pretensioner), always first activate the seat belt pretensioner in accordance with the procedures described below. If any abnormality occurs during activation of the seat belt pretensioner, contact the service department of the distributor.

    CAUTION:


    • An airbag or pretensioner may be activated by static electricity. To prevent this, be sure to touch a metal surface with bare hands to discharge static electricity before performing this procedure.

    • Never dispose of a front seat outer belt assembly LH that has an unactivated pretensioner.

    • The seat belt pretensioner produces an exploding sound when it activates, so perform the operation outdoors and where it will not create a nuisance to nearby residents.

    • When activating the seat belt pretensioner, always use the specified SST (SRS airbag deployment tool).

    • Perform procedures in a place away from electrical interference.

    • When activating a front seat outer belt assembly LH (with seat belt pretensioner), stand at least 10 m (32.8 ft.) away from the front seat outer belt assembly LH.

    • Use gloves and safety glasses when handling a front seat outer belt assembly LH with an activated pretensioner.

    • Do not apply water to a front seat outer belt assembly LH that has an activated pretensioner.

    • Always wash your hands with water after completing the disposal.

  2. DISPOSE OF FRONT SEAT OUTER BELT ASSEMBLY LH (WHEN INSTALLED IN VEHICLE)

    Tech Tips

    Prepare a battery as the power source to activate the seat belt pretensioner.

      Check the function of SST.

      CAUTION:

      When activating the seat belt pretensioner, always use the specified SST (SRS Airbag Deployment Tool).

        Connect SST to the battery.

        Connect the red clip of SST to the positive (+) battery terminal and the black clip of SST to the negative (-) battery terminal.

        Check the function of SST.

        Press SST activation switch and check that the LED of SST activation switch comes on.

        CAUTION:


        • Do not connect the yellow connector. The yellow connector is used to connect to the seat belt pretensioner.

        • If the LED comes on when the activation switch is not being pressed, SST may be malfunctioning, so replace SST with a new one.

    2. Disconnect SST from the battery.

    3. Remove the front door scuff plate LH Click here.

    4. Remove the lower quarter trim panel assembly LH Click here.

    5. w/o Power Window:

      Operate the front door window regulator handle, open the front side window and pass SST wire harness into the vehicle.

    6. w/ Power Window:

      Operate the power window regulator master switch assembly, open the front side window and pass SST wire harness into the vehicle.

    7. While maintaining enough clearance for SST wire harness in the front side window, close all windows of the vehicle.

      Note

      Take care not to damage SST wire harness.

    8. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

      CAUTION:

      Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

    9. Install SST.

        Pull the lock plate to release the connector lock.

      2. Disconnect the pretensioner connector from the front seat outer belt assembly LH retractor.

        Note

        When handling the pretensioner connector, take care not to damage the pretensioner wire harness.

        Connect SST connector to the front seat outer belt assembly LH retractor.

      4. Push in the lock plate to lock SST connector.

        Note

        To avoid damaging SST connector and the wire harness, do not lock the secondary lock of the twin lock.

      5. Close all doors.

        Move SST at least 10 m (32.8 ft.) away from the front of the vehicle.

    10. Activate the seat belt pretensioner.


      1. Check that no one is inside the vehicle or within a 10 m (32.8 ft.) radius of the vehicle.

      2. Connect the red clip of SST to the positive (+) battery terminal and the black clip of SST to the negative (-) battery terminal.

      3. Press SST activation switch to activate the seat belt pretensioner.

        CAUTION:


        • When activating the seat belt pretensioner, make sure that no one is near the vehicle.

        • Do not touch the front seat outer belt assembly LH for at least 30 minutes after the seat belt pretensioner has been activated. It is very hot.

        • Use gloves and safety glasses when handling a front seat outer belt assembly LH whose pretensioner has been activated.

        • Do not apply water, etc. to a front seat outer belt assembly LH that has an activated pretensioner.

        • Always wash your hands with water after completing the operation.

        Tech Tips


        • The seat belt pretensioner operates at the same time SST activation switch LED illuminates.

        • When scrapping a vehicle, activate the seat belt pretensioner, and then scrap the vehicle with the activated front seat outer belt assembly LH installed.

  3. DISPOSE OF FRONT SEAT OUTER BELT ASSEMBLY LH (WHEN NOT INSTALLED IN VEHICLE)

    Note

    Be sure to follow the procedures listed below when activating the seat belt pretensioner.

      1. Wind the seat belt with the retractor.

        When the seat belt is sufficiently wound, cut the seat belt approximately 100 mm (0.393 in.) from the retractor as shown in the illustration.

        Tech Tips

        The seat belt is designed so that winding the seat belt before pretensioner activation will decrease the pulling power of the seat belt during pretensioner activation.

      4. Push in the lock plate to lock SST connector.

        Note

        Place the front seat outer belt assembly LH on the ground and cover it with a tire (with wheel).

        Note

        Set up the front seat outer belt assembly LH as shown in the illustration.

    6. Activate the seat belt pretensioner.


      1. Check that no one is within a 10 m (32.8 ft.) radius of the wheel.

      2. Connect the red clip of SST to the positive (+) battery terminal and the black clip of SST to the negative (-) battery terminal.

      3. Press SST activation switch to activate the seat belt pretensioner.

        CAUTION:


        • When activating the seat belt pretensioner, make sure that no one is near the wheel.

        • Do not touch the front seat outer belt for at least 30 minutes after the seat belt pretensioner has been activated. It is very hot.

        • Use gloves and safety glasses when handling a front seat outer belt assembly LH whose pretensioner has been activated.

        • Do not apply water, etc. to a front seat outer belt assembly LH that has an activated pretensioner.

        • Always wash your hands with water after completing the operation.

    7. Dispose of the front seat outer belt assembly LH (with the seat belt pretensioner).

      CAUTION:


      • Do not touch the front seat outer belt assembly LH for at least 30 minutes after the seat belt pretensioner has been activated. It is very hot.

      • Use gloves and safety glasses when handling a front seat outer belt assembly LH whose pretensioner has been activated.

      • Do not apply water, etc. to a front seat outer belt assembly LH that has an activated pretensioner.

      • Always wash your hands with water after completing disposal.


      1. Remove the tire (with wheel) and SST.

        Place the front seat outer belt assembly LH in a plastic bag, tie the end tightly and dispose of it in the same way as other general parts.
